@seth Various people have and probably still do maintain blocklists. There are pros and cons to this. I'd prefer my admin to make case-by-case decisions about instance blocks and when in doubt, leave us to unfollow, mute, block, and report as appropriate. @maia

And you can just block people posting things you don't want to read manually, or an instance can be marked as NSFW by default.Defederating completely goes against the whole idea of a federated medium. The only sane reason I can see to actually defederate an instance is if it is just spam.If you want a highly moderated environment that only allows the current popular corporate mindset, go use Twitter or Facebook.
