Considering rejecting the institutional paradigm which says to transition your child to solids ASAP.Might just stay majority breastfed with food as a snack until baby is 1.

@TinyFern This is just a meme to do 2 things, 1) get mothers back into the workforce ASAP, and 2) sell more baby formula and food by big food

@TinyFern In your experience how much advice about kids is completely wrong? 50%? 90%?

@Aether Yeah it seems like the 'medical recommendations' are basically to ensure that having a child doesn't disrupt your professional lifestyle too much - optimise for childcare, for limited maternity leave, for multiple and varied carers, for maximum consumption.

@cirnog Depends where you get your advice from really and how you want to live. If you want to live like a peasant it's all terrible ideas as far as the medical establishment is concerned. If you want to put your kid through the standard tv race experience then it's ideal.

@TinyFern @cirnog Personally, I'd recommend breastfed for longer if you can handle it. :0450: did well for me, I was a very healthy child

@cirnog @TinyFern I've got a new book to help you. Every 6 months. Please don't notice how the new editions will continue to contradict each other.

@cirnog Do what comes intuitively Ignore all advice about what should be happening, accept only practical advice about use of particular activities or blankets to put the child to sleep or change them etc. If in doubt, ask what a mediaeval peasant would probably do and adapt that to your circumstances

@cirnog I mean if you're not starting at 15 then you probably will struggle to produce more than a half-dozen. They tell you about how you're fertile right after birth but if the woman is breastfeeding in the natural style the average wait for return to fertility is more like 15 months. That puts a 2 year gap between kids and you want to stop before you hit 40 because you'll start to see birth defects like down syndrome.

@TinyFern >breastfeeding prevents pregnancyI've somehow never heard this. You say before 40 does that mean 30s is more of a soft wall? Do you know if it's different if the first kid is before 30?

@cirnog @TinyFern keep in mind there are caveats and things with the whole breastfeeding as birth control thing. it only lasts for about 6 months, and if you follow mainstream doctor advice when breastfeeding (which is designed to get you to stop breastfeeding and buy soy products from nestle), it won't have the same effect.if this is something that concerns you, look for non-mainstream sources of medical information. e.g. your doctor isn't going to tell you that pumping doesn't cause the same kind of prolactin hormone release as the baby suckling does, so it won't be as effective controlling pregnancy. because he doesn't care about your baby, if he's not prescribing you something he wants you out of his office. naturalwomanhood.org/fabm-postpartum-nfp-does-breastfeeding-prevent-pregnancy/

@grey @cirnog The phrase you want is 'ecological breastfeeding' which is different to how most women do it now. Basically you apply boob at all relevant moments rather than pumping, using formula, or leaving the child with another caregiver and a pacifier. It does mean that the baby is basically glued to the mum but does usually prevent pregnancy for a long while. A fact I have just learned while researching this to share with you is that my instinct to not push solids and to keep my baby primarily on breast milk past 1yo is actually exactly how it used to be done and in line with ecological breastfeeding practices. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3042247/(Pics from here) This is written much more casually but addresses common myths and why you probably believe them: thenaturalcatholicmom.com/2018/04/23/exclusive-and-ecological-breastfeeding-are-not-the-same/amp/This one has stats: birthway.co/schwartz-and-sweet/2017/11/29/ecological-breastfeeding

@TinyFern @cirnog The mental defects risk spikes starting at age 35. If she hasn't reproduced by 33, it's time to consider adoption.

With our children a slow transition into more solid food occurred on its own because they were intrinsicly curious about what their parents were eating. They begged for/snagged some vegetables even before the first teeth showed. Offering a curated selection of what we were eating led to them adopting our regular meal schedule around the time they were 9 months old. The meals were of course only supplementary to actual breastfeeding, but the only downside to the change in diet has been increasingly demanding diaper cleaning.
