       For everyone new or having a hard time with Mastodon instances here's a way I like to use to explain it to my friends using Harry Potter:Think of Mastodon as Hogwarts and every instance is a house (Gryffindor, Slytherin, etc). Every house has their common room (the one with the painting) where only the people of that house interact, here we call that room the Local Timeline.But all houses can interact with each other in the dinning room, here it would be the Federated / Network Timeline.

       It's important to choose a House / Instance because each one has their own set of rules or themes and they can hide the content of a specific instance or block it.If you feel like your instance is taking a direction that you don't like you can always migrate your profile to another instance or create your own one.I hope this makes easier to understand instances in Mastodon.        Now if you are ready for more and want to expand outside Mastodon this metaphore can be used to explain the Fediverse too!So now schools (like Beauxbatos and Durmstrang) would be apps (Like Pleroma, Pixelfed, etc) they would have the same internal dynamic as we explained before but because they are part of the Fediverse they can interact with eachother too!  Example: I can follow profiles of Pleroma from my Mastodon account.
