I like how Elon Musk is now a super villain compared to the previous owners of Twitter.Lol what? He's hardly a "good guy", but he's not a Satan either. He's a typical hustler, but he's done some good stuff with his hustle money. Cheap available internet, sure it probably spies on you - but that's no change from what you have now.Electric cars are better for the environment, if not by as much as the media suggests but it's still an improvement, sure. He's brought interest back into space and has given the west a way to get stuff into space without the Russians and for cheaper prices then ever before.Oh, and he bought some dumb social media company that was formally mostly owned by the Saudis. But for some reason that freaks everyone out. :blobshrug:Why is the left panicking about this, seriously?

It’s left-leaning MSM and bluechecks freaking out about this. Twitter has been stacked against conservatives for years, and they thought they had a firm grip on the narrative. Now with a lot of banned right-wingers likely coming back, all their effort was for nothing.

@shebang a heavier, more complex vehicle cannot possibly use less energy nor be better for the environment...

@js290 I've seen @dave talk about this a few times. I'd see what he has to say.

@shebang @dave @js290 but what will happen when the spent lion batteries on every car on earth is producing a tonne of toxic waste every 10 years?

@coyote @shebang @dave "The industrial activity that expands relentlessly... is basically a campaign to promote energy consumption. Its target has not been so much to boost energy production as to senselessly waste energy... he closes his eyes to the fact that the efficiency of these sources (ratio of total energy input to total energy output) has worsened exponentially in the same order." -Masanobu Fukuoka, The Natural Way of Farming, Natural Farming for a New Age, The Only Future For Man

The statement that they can’t be more efficient is only true if we’re comparing apples to apples (ICE cars to other ICE cars), but isn’t true when we compare ICE to electric.ICE cars only convert about 1/4th to 1/3rd of the fuel burned into usable kinetic energy even in an optimistic scenario (highway cruising). By contrast, power plants use much more optimized setups which are closer to 50% efficient, so there’s already big gains to be had there, even accounting for power transmission losses. But that’s just the start. The real gains come from the fact that you can power electric cars with low-carbon energy sources (wind, solar, hydro, nuclear), which grids all over the world are increasingly transitioning to. It used to be the case 10-15 years ago that a lot of states were mostly coal/natural gas, so your electric might create emissions equivalent to a car that gets 35MPG, barely better than a good ICE sedan, and worse than some hybrids. Now, in the USA, in most regions you will get at least 50MPG, many are well above that, and in some regions you are as high as 200MPG. Maps of old grid equivalents (2009) and more current ones (2018) are attached. It is true that producing an EV generates more CO2 than an ICE car initially, but depending on where and how you’re driving it, the crossover point where lifecycle emissions becomes less is somewhere around the 40,000-75,000 mile mark, well before most vehicles are recycled.Batteries are another thing where the issue is somewhat exaggerated. Early EVs did have issues with premature battery degradation, but better battery chemistry and better active temp management is leading to EV batteries that last an incredibly long time. Attached is a chart of Tesla degradation based on real-world range data from thousands of Tesla drivers. As you can see, even at 200,000 miles (300,000+ km), they still retain almost 90% capacity. And chemistry has only improved, with new Teslas shipping with what they call “million mile batteries” which are supposed to be even better.Anyways, tl;dr is that they take more emissions to produce, but are better for the environment overall when looking at a total lifecycle analysis. Also, batteries dying after only a few years were mainly a thing for older EVs. Newer ones should last.

@shebang IMO it's everybody that follows the heard, not a specific political group. At least outside of the US.

@dave @shebang energy density... can you fly a plane on electric? What are the conversion losses getting the energy into the battery before it powers a 4000lb vehicle? CO2 is still only 0.05% of atmospheric gases by volume.

@notbren More then that, really, it forced their enemies to play by their dishonest and arbitrary rules.
