Years of engineering went into designing intricate steam turbines and cooling loops to capture as much usable energy from heat as possible and convert it into electricity.Because electricity is the most practical form of energy, which you can easily convert into motion, chemical energy, light computation, anything you like. And you can reroute it from one use to abother in less than a second. It feels so wrong to turn that electricity back into heat to boil water. And yet, electric kettles

@wolf480pl meanwhile, i'm saving energy on only heating the water to the temperature required for what i am going to make (which is often much less than boiling) and also having an insulated kettle so any leftovers stay worm for relatively long time (again losing less energy), which is obviously impossible with the gas

@wolf480pl eh, the lines become blurred from our perspective but I there's plenty to fight about at the top, even supposing a highly conspiratorial world. in any case, these empires aren't evil; they're just empires, and they behave as they always have.make no mistake though, a flawed democracy is infinitely preferable to even a well run autocracy imo

@skells yeah, "evil" was a gross oversimplification. In any case, where I live, Putin controlling the gas supply has been a problem on multiple occasions. I don't know whether it'd be better or worse if it was USA president controlling it.

@wolf480pl the irony is that the green movement precipitated it, not to say that they didn't have good reasons, just that getting off of green AND nuclear at the same time was a tough ask

@wolf480pl any practical and convenient for heating stuff solution yet?i don't ever care for kettles or hot beverage, really...but i do historically care for heating up food, intrinsically built in my culture.and i work towards a solution... soon enough, hopefully, with boccara.org + perhaps you'll like to see their amazing idea. even if it can't easily get practiced today.

@cregox I'm not saying electic kettles are wrong, or that I have better solutions. I'm just think the situation is ironic.Personally I'll use either gas or electricity, whichever I have at hand. Ideally we'd alm be utilizing waste heat from computers or powerplants but that requires doing your cooking in the same place and time as computation or electricity production which is the opposite of convenient....

@cregox I looked briefly, saw the headline about energy, water food and medicine and thought it'd be too wide to quickly dig down into the energy part.On a second look, looks like just scrolling down reveals a couple interesting proposals. For cooming food specifically, the mirror thing seems like it'd be useful. I don't think it would work well at my latitude, especially in winter, but for Global South it may be pretty good.

@skells IIRC wind turbines kill birds and make noise that scares animals off. But don't quote me on that, I haven't read much on the topic. Also worth looking into is the production process for the PV panels and wind turbines, how much materials and energy it takes, how much waste it creates, and how do you dispose of a broken PV panel or wind turbine, then divide that by expected lifetime of the device.

@skells @wolf480pl My understanding is that in order to build enough turbines to generate enough power to serve a regional or national power grid in any meaningful way, you have to clearcut massive swathes of land and bulldoze away any habitats that get in the way of the construction and maintenance of the turbines. This applies to offshore as well, since they need to be anchored in the ocean floor.

@wolf480pl@mstdn.io Need some improvements to get a heat pump kettle. AFAIK, you still can't really achieve 100C difference with heat pumps yet, but when we can, get ready for potentially more efficient way of heating water than burning stuff.

@blaue_Fledermaus the point is that heat > electricity transfer is incredibly efficient but electricity > heat transfer is… kettle-grade efficient.
