--- Tips to Mastodon/fediverse newbies ---Hi, welcome! First thing you should know is, fedi is not exactly equal to Twitter - thankfully! So keep an open mind and allow yourself some time to adapt.Don't just join the biggest instances (i.e., mastodon.social); their size creates *many* problems. But don't stress too much over picking a instance, you can easily migrate to another later. And you can follow people from any instance - it's more like e-mail or RSS than twitter in this regard. 1/n

Finding people to follow on the fediverse is hard, because we don't really have celebrities or influencers or companies (we very much don't _want_ to have them!).Just pick a few random people that look cool to follow, then follow people they boost or interact with, and unfollow people you don't particularly care for.Interact with others politely, post a little even if no one seems to be listening, and over time you get to know people. It's easier on medium-sized instances.2/n

Make liberal use of the tools to improve your experience:Mute or block people (it isn't like passing judgement on someone - you just don't want to see their posts, it's fine). You can mute entire keywords or phrases, and not see posts containing them.Everyone is encouraged to use content warnings, very useful. Not every instance talks to every other - it's fine, forget the fear of missing out. This helps keep everything pleasant.3/n

Things may be confusing at first, don't panic. Sometimes you may see chopped conversations, or images that won't load. Some features may not be obvious. The fediverse is a mess of servers with different policies, different software, people posting with various privacy settings. It lacks the homogeneous awfulness of corporate social media where everything is simple so long as you don't mind the manipulation and abuse.4/n

Lastly, a small warning. There is always inter-instance drama. It's natural, it's how the "network" corrects itself by banning the bad actors and such. I mean, not federating with trolls and nazis is great, right? But it can get nasty and personal. You may safely ignore the drama (and I strongly recommend so) unless you are an instance admin or mod (or a bad actor, I guess).5/5

@eldakingIf you use Pleroma you get super cool stickers and can write out 5000 word posts, which means you don't need to split it out in a thread like if you use Twitter. Even better you can self host it easier.https://pleroma.social
