@graf @parker heat lamps in the coop. You want to run artificial lighting anyway since chickens only lay when they get 16 hours or more of light a day

@graf @parker Depends on how cold your winters are I would imagine, you might need a heating lamp or they might be perfectly find with clean bedding and shelter.

@graf You can use a heat lamp (keeps them laying through the winter if you want also), or a decently insulated coop, or just get breeds that can handle the cold. Heritage breeds, one that have feathers on their legs, they do well. Though Ontario isn't cold enough that it's a worry anyways.

@parker thank you friendthere's a lot of people in our group that raise them but for a while i wasnt in a position to have chickens due to living in city or whatever but im going to build one this summer, I think. I have a lot of projects to finish but my gf brought up a valid point last night that I need to raise chickens if i want to be even moderately self sufficient such as for baking, pastas and other things require eggs. she also told me i need to build sauna so i will be doing that

@blackeyes Nah, my parents only have 5-6 acres, so three livestock units. A cow would use up an entire unit. They might try pigs though.

@ConfederateHobo Thank you. Much better than last year. Air Canada left all the bees in an unheated quonset, plus supply chain delays, resulting in all last year's shipment dying.

@graf And we had one chicken named stumpy, a non-hardy breed someone else had given us. His first winter, his feet froze right off, so he walked around on the nubs. Did that for years and managed it just fine.
