#Protonmail saying"Big Tech has also grown bigger than ever. Through rigging the game by leveraging their ecosystems to lock users in..."While also making all their services *not* work with protocols like #CalDAV, #CardDAV, #WebDAV at all, and also locking #IMAP behind a paywall...I do use Protonmail and they deserve some respect for making privacy easy for the everyday user, but still...

@joel I thought this was to ensure e2ee for their services which is not compatible with these protocols. That their bridges are paywalled is a bit Meg, though.

@joel I’ve never seen the attraction of Proton and their ilk. I prefer to see email as inherently insecure and not private (which is accurate). If I want to send something over email that needs to be secure or private, I send a link to a secured file on my server, then the password via other means.I don’t think Proton solves any problems. It’s just another silo.

@joel I totally agree with @kev. Email is inherently insecure. Even using services such as as ProtonMail or Tutanota, to achieve the advertised security implies that both the sender and the receiver must use the same platform. In my view, its better to use normal IMAP and use different means for transferring sensitive information.

@kev @joel Right on point to me as well. Use GPG for email content. That's the best you're going to get. Otherwise email tech would have to change.

@kev @joel I've always been told that e-mail is basically a postcard. When you have this idea in your head, you quickly understand the protocol issues regarding security and privacy (and how to compensate them). However, PGP encryption is not really user friendly too. But there are other ways to do like using a secured file transfer service for sensitive data for example instead of using mail attachment.

@cvog @kev at the very least their clients should able to open 3rd party accounts using these protocols, so I can use a single app for everything. Yeah I would like that.In fact, they could provide encryption pretty easily to those accounts when sending emails via their client. It would not really solve the inherent problem, but it would be kinda interesting

@joel @kev these are decent proposals. Maybe something for Tutanota to consider. Too bad ProtonMail is not into Mastodon any more.

@frankie @joel FYI there is a 3rd party app #hydroxide that gives an IMAP bridge at no cost. But indeed Protonmail doesn’t get credit for that and their statement remains a #hypocrisy.

@kev @joel To say #email is inherently insecure is a bit misleading b/c it leads people to incorrectly believe that security cannot be bolted on as an afterthought -- when in fact it can. And to speak of whether a tool is secure is to make assumptions about a threat model, so that’s dicey too. Pubkey crypto can conceal email msg payloads & standards like #Memoryhole can conceal some headers.
