Something I don't understand: I use the mobile web version of Mastodon. From what I can tell, it's got feature parity with the desktop version. When you "add to homescreen" on Android, it almost looks and behaves like a native Android app. I can see both local and federated timelines through the mobile web.Why don't people just use that version instead of the one you can install though Google Play?See screenshot.

@atomicpoet Tusky has scheduled toots on top of feature parity, and it also looks better, so I use that.

@atomicpoetWho even died and made Mastodon king anyway it's just a Gnusocial derivative. I can't see any reason why it should matter to a user if their instance uses Mastodon, Pleroma, or something else. In before pedants come running to correct me on who came first etc.

@MitchConner I have my own theory about why Mastodon took off more than others. 1. Of mainstream social networks, Twitter's featureset was easiest to duplicate2. Simultaneously, Mastodon's culture is also the most similar to old-school Tumblr3. Neither Pixelfed nor Lemmy are ready for prime time4. Video still has a big cost

@atomicpoetAlso I think you missed the part where Pleroma, gnu social, and other federated Twitteralikes exist. I wasn't comparing them to completely different things. My friend @coolboymew for example is on a Pleroma server, not Mastodon.

@MitchConner @coolboymew Don't know that much about Pleroma, but I've used Gnu Social and it was a painful experience. I believe the ancestor to all this stuff was identi.ca. That had a measure of popularity amongst open source fans but never talk off amongst everyone else. Anyway, I first came to see the Fediverse as finally having momentum in 2018. The momentum is building slowly but now it's feasible as a replacement for centralized social.

@atomicpoetAnd actually the irony is that I was attracted to Mastodon recently because all the good apps for Linux phones won't load Pleroma instances for me even though they should be compatible with Mastodon api.

@atomicpoet @MitchConner we had to all move from Gnu Social because as the userbase grew, and so did the servers, the instances actually started to implode
