I have been thinking a lot about the stuff that is actually worth self-hosting for me among the multiple services I installed without putting much thought into if I actually needed them. I ended up writing a post with more words than usual!https://joelchrono12.xyz/blog/rethinking-self-hosting-needs/It also gave me an excuse to use a ton of hashtags...#blog #selfhosting #selfhosted #raspberrypi #syncthing #nextcloud #freshrss #calibre #caldav #CardDAV #jellyfin #photoprism #gitea

@joel I self-host a lot of these too. There are probably things you can do to make this more useful. For example, use tailscale with a low-cost VPS to expose your services without opening ports. Gitea allows you to sync repos to GitHub or Gitlab, so you can use it as your main interface but use GitHub/Lab as a backup/public interface. I recently scaled back on what I exposed to the internet, but I still run a lot of these services.

@joel thanks for sharing! Made some notes for myself. With regards to Jellyfin and re-encoding. Have you tried an Emby server? It has pretty decent web and mobile clients. Also disabling transcoding allows to watch 1080p@8500kbps videos even on OrangePI Win without turning it into a frying pan, though it has modest 2GB of RAM. Just feed it with the directory of totally legal torrents and enjoy.https://emby.media

@brandonllocke @joel Self-hosting is indeed a lot of work. Being highly motivated really helps. For me, I set out to de-google (de-bigtech) my digital world. #Selfhosting becomes my default choice, naturally.

@ninja @brandonllocke oh yeah, self-hosting can be very tedious, but tbh my main reason wasn't that, but the fact I found no use for many services, at least for now.My raspberry will stay running so O can always just login again anyways :P

@joel @ninja I don't find self-hosting that tedious. You just have to keep on top of anything you have exposed. Compared to letting someone else do it, sure, but that assumes there is no "cost" to letting someone else do it. We all know there is. Self-hosting got a lot easier for me once I embraced Docker (though I am looking at Podman).

@joel Have you tried using something more lightweight like Radicale (what I use) for calendar and contacts? Hosting an entire nextcloud instance sounds overboard.I've been trying to get Joplin to sync to WebDAV, but have yet to succeed. Hopefully soon.We seem to share a few services we self-host. :)

@benjaminhollon I mentioned Radicale while talking about Nextcloud on my post :blobcatderpy: Right at the very bottom https://joelchrono12.xyz/blog/rethinking-self-hosting-needs/#nextcloud

@benjaminhollon I mentioned Radicale while talking about Nextcloud on my post :blobcatderpy: Basically, Baikal is the main proposal that I might switch to. But I like to edit the contacts and such from the web interface so yeah.. https://joelchrono12.xyz/blog/rethinking-self-hosting-needs/#nextcloud

@joel Oop, I'd missed that.I'm curious, why do you need the web interface?

@benjaminhollon Nextcloud has a ton of fields for social media or messaging protocols that don't show up in Android and other contact programs....To be honest, if they don't show up anywhere else they are probably not that useful. But then custom fields added from the contacts app don't show up in the web UI either. So yeah, I guess CardDAV can be a bit of a mess :blobcatderpy:

@debugger Jellyfish is fine for me, afaik Emby is now closed source for the most part which kinda sucksI don't really struggle with loading times or anything, I just re-encode to save storage space but it still takes a while to do so from the raspberry pi, so I was doing it on laptop first and then sending it to the raspi.

Some Emby client?

@joel got it now. Thought at first that Jellyfin itself is inconvenient for you.Emby client from the screenshot: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mb.android

@joel Yeah, that's why I don't rely on it too much. Usually, I just look up an email from whoever I need to contact. I just thought I'd add it so I'm syncing to my server rather than icloud for my phone's contacts.
