Part of the problem is the network effect, all your friends are on Twitter and Discord, so there is a penalty for not participating on those centralized, proprietary networks.

@Moon I know plenty of people that are waiting to get out from Discord's boot. Matrix's problem as much as anything is how cumbersome it is to install and manage and how poorly it runs. Most are just holding out until Teamspeak 5 drops, whenever that will be.

@Moon @graf My take is it's still early. We're in 1998. The software will improve and people will trickle in. At the same time, the content in the main services becomes more and more stale. I'm pretty optimistic.Not sure why crypto scene is not more involved in decentralized stuff. One would think it's their bread & butter

Decentralized isn't something they want catching on, it stands to reason that they're happy dumping coin into stuff, buying positions of influence, and making sure whatever takes root is integrated into their systemI had hope for it, but seeing how many political NGO leeches pretty much walked right on councils and management, it looks a bit bleak

@MechaSilvio @Moon @graf Yes, but I fear that it, being super centralized, will be used as a "lifeboat" to smash online dissident networking. Everyone got off the SS youtube and disembarked into the rafts, now they're getting cozy on the TG. Once it too takes a torpedo they probably won't have developed resilient backup networks, leaving those cultures scattered for good. At least that's the idea.

@MechaSilvio @graf @Moon I would say that this is probably the golden age of the fediverse:relatively high barrier to entry means higher quality people;relative obscurity means little governmental / regulatory pressure.Look at how the establishment responded to musk attempting to buy twitter: clearly they value the power of social media.I think going forward there will be increased attacks on the fediverse (especially if/when the user base increases substantially):CSAM attacks (likely govt / (((NGO))) funded), where CSAM is uploaded to a server and then the site gets fined / taken down / attacked in the media because it didn’t take it down in 0.1 seconds.Spam attacksDDOS attacksHacking attacks (doxxing users)Doxxing and debanking adminsOutright banning by the govtLegal attacks and regulation by the govt (i.e. outright banning but with extra steps (for all but the most cucked instances))One counter argument is that email is federated and it’s not (completely) cucked, but the problem here is that email is far less dynamic than social media.All that being said, I will enjoy my time in the sun. Additionally, not all countries will be this draconian - it will mostly just be the anti-White western countries. Many countries (esp countries in the 3rd world) will not repress it or will lack the ability to repress it.As the proportion of non-Whites in western countries increases the ability of the state to crack down on technologically sophisticated users will decrease (although the govt’s willing to openly target Whites will increase, see e.g. South Africa).Federated software is one type of decentralised software, but there is also peer-to-peer software.
