I was just thinking about the trend of giving baby girls traditional “boy” names. This was a few years ago. Some girls were named “Ryan,” for example; one baby name book even said “George” was a “fresh” choice for a girl. None of this had anything to do with “trans,” although it was somewhat silly. I wonder how often these girls (now teens or young women) are now asked if they’re “trans.” If they have short hair and live in a “woke” area, it is probably simply assumed.

@Cousin_Isobel I wouldn't named my daughter masculine names but I would let her play with whatever toys she want and let her pick the clothes she wants and even have a haircut. The same if I have a boy I would not give him a feminine name but I would let him play with whatever toys and wear dresses and stuff like that if he wants and even have long hair.

@Cousin_Isobel I know a girl with a masculine name, but everyone calls her a feminine name. Her hair is all over the place. I wouldn't call it short, wouldn't call it long. I'd call it mess honestly. From my understanding it was a trend before in the USA anyways. Like there's that actress Michael Learned. And there's Rue McClanahan who's name was Eddi-Rue. Heard someone say it was a thing in the South for awhile in those days, like 30s/40s? Don't know if true. In the Netherlands we have a bunch of names that have like a male and female version, but the female version has -je after it. Like Gijs vs Gijsje for instance. In the old days those were common names for women. They've been making a comeback with some people. Not wokesters though, but some are hipsters. But I'd consider those more unisex names, but don't know how wokesters see those names and would react to them.

@Thais21 That seems right to me. I can’t even exactly put my finger on why it’s wrong to give a girl a masculine name, but I just didn’t want to do it. I actually thought I was being nice to boys by shunning “boy” names for girls, because often, once girls are given “boy” names (like Aubrey or Leslie), they aren’t given to boys anymore, and I thought, “Well, we can’t take all of them.” Also, I never wanted sex to be a question or major topic of any kind when meeting new friends or dealing with strangers; this was before “trans” was popular, but I just didn’t want my daughter to face annoying questions on the playground, like, “Oh, your name is Ryan? But you look like a girl.” It just seemed like it would be annoying for her to have to deal with. For some reason, it’s really popular in my area for boys to have long hair, but not for girls to have short hair. I feel like a short-haired girl would receive more questions (e.g., about being “trans”) than a long-haired boy. When I was little, it was the reverse.

@Cousin_Isobel @Thais21 It's always interesting when I discover actresses with men's names. Jeff Donnell was a very good actress, then there's Michael Learned, etc.

@Cousin_Isobel What's interesting is how names change. Evelyn was a man's name; the only Laverne I ever knew was a man. Leslie was a man's name, etc.

@Cousin_Isobel @Thais21 My parents gave me a boy name. I like it. Have had some funny scenarios where people are surprised I'm not a man when I am called for a job interviews and stuff like that. Also, sometimes men prefer to call me Miss. Lastname, women never do that. I think it makes some men uncomfortable, that they cannot feminize my name in any way.

@LadyMont Oh, yes, I remember Rue being Eddi-Rue, from her autobiography, but I don’t remember why. I did know some women in the South with boys’ names, to honor the men in the family if there were no boys. A girl’s middle name would be added, so she could be called by both and it would sound feminine. One woman was named Henry Ann, for example, or it might have been Henri Ann. This was Rue McClanahan’s generation, way before “trans,” so I don’t think it presented much confusion.

@Cousin_Isobel She was named Eddi-Rue by her aunt on her father's side. Her aunt had convinced her mother to let her name the first born child. Her mother agreed if she was allowed to name her (the aunt) first born. So Rue became Eddi-Rue and her cousin (a girl) became Earl something. It was basically a joke between her aunt and her mom. So weird. Michael Learned (same generation as Rue McClanahan) wasn't named in honor of a man. She was never explained why, just that if she had been born a boy she would've been named Caleb. Again weird. But why the hell not.

@LadyMont @Cousin_Isobel I remember gender neutral names being a thing when I was growing up. Kelly, Lesley/Leslie, Pat, Chris, Charlie, Fred, Will/Bill could all be male or female.

@Eleutheromaniac @Cousin_Isobel I forgot Kelly was used for boys. Reminds me of Kim, a girls name. But a couple asian boys in the neighborhood were called Kim as well, when I was growing up. Doesn't Fred come from Winnifred?

@KeepTakingTheSoma Oaty Jim???I have to say, the one thing that has gone right in the past ten years is that the names are better. The names you mention seem to have passed out of fashion, and I tend to meet girls with classic names like Rosie, Charlotte, Natalie, etc.

@LadyMont @Eleutheromaniac @Cousin_Isobel Kipling wrote a book about a boy called Kim. Fred as a boy’s name comes from Frederick. I have been wondering where Fred Vargas’ name came from?

@Cousin_Isobel I have noticed a trend for the Edwardian names; Archie, Elsie, Rose, Edwin etc. I do like these. We thought long and hard about naming our children. We wanted to include some family names as well as giving them names that would take them through childhood into their adult lives. Not Oaty Jim or Tinkerbell.

@AnneBevan @Eleutheromaniac @Cousin_Isobel Kim isn't a masculine name by Dutch standards though. So it was confusing apparently.

@KeepTakingTheSoma I love those names. I think the family tree is a good place to look for first names, and if nothing quite suits as a first name, the middle name slot is a great place to honor a grandparent or great-grandparent.
