I have a long list of things to do today, but first I'm gonna find out if LibreOffice has all the tracking and comment features I need for my thesis so I can FINALLY install Linux and not have to worry anymore about Windows randomly updating and closing all my thesis resources that I've been collecting for WEEKS. 😠😠

Do I maybe need a better archiving system than to keep a 1000 articles open in a browser that deletes my history upon closing? ✅️ yesAm I going to do the exact same thing on Linux? ✅️ Also yes

@Gina Good luck! That feels like the hardest thing to do. To find compatible software that actually works with whatever is required.

@Gina this sounds like the most familiar thing. You could also use some kind of system and then feel like you are recreating the Google index in your own home.

@Gina are you using Zotero or any other citation software for collecting literature?

@Gina I've never used tracking and commenting in libreoffice but my experience with most functions that are not built in to the document spec is that they work in libreoffice but have poor compatibility in other suites. That's not a shortcoming of libreoffice, just the nature of the ecosystem.

@Gina Zotero is amazing! Not only does it help with collecting literature but also helps you cite from within LibreOffice. Another feature that was recently added is the ability to directly work with PDFs. So you can Mark sections in a PDF with different colors and store those makings and even search them.

@Gina From time to time, I shift about 90 browser tabs to Nextcloud Bookmarks. The others I just close.

@Gina I got sick of that happening to me a couple years ago, found a plug-in that keeps a (local-only) history of your open tabs/windows, and has them available to reopen with a couple clicks after browser (or system) reboot.https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-session-manager/It does other archiving-like stuff, too. There's probably a Chrome version, as well.

@Gina It is a shame that special Software is required to write your thesis. When I studied, some people wrote their thesis with a typewriter. I used for everything LaTeX. Easier times I guess 😀 .

@Gina Also check OnlyOffice, It doesn't have all the features LibreOffice has, but it's much prettier IMO (and great compatibility with .docx)

@Gina I found a dead-simple solution that actually works. Bookmarks (in firefox)! But I do not put them in folders, I only tag them with a couple of relevant keywords. I sync it with Firefox Sync, so I have access on my phone and other computers. Also, I disabled cookies and history, so when I use the omnibar, I only search in my own bookmarks – a much betger signal to noise ratio!

@Gina I changed my habits to save everything to Pocket instead of bookmarks or open tabs.https://getpocket.comIt works a charm across many devices and I plan to get a Kobo e-reader soon which also supports Pocket. That way I hope I can actually catch up on a massive backlog of I-should-really-this-one-day articles without all the other distractions my laptop typically brings.

@Gina for thesis writing, zotero will be your friend. Bookmarking things gets confusing after a few yearsSource: my partner who is on the home stretch after 5 years and over 500 pages writtenIf you want to make your life even more complicated, write your thesis in LaTeX

@Gina In case you're using Firefox - the MySessions extension has been pretty successful at recovering the tab state from any mishap that happened on my partner's computer up to now, so that could be worth trying.

@GinaAt the risk of being annoying, maybe you should check your update settings, because this isn't default behaviour. The first time it asks you when you want to plan your updates. It can even determine when is convenient based on your usage.

@Gina My distro (I use kubuntu) can automatically restore previous state of windows & tabs after reboot (I dont usually use reboot, huh). Works pretty good with firefox :ablobcateyesflip:
