@atoponce All because Mozilla made an explicit decision to stop supporting embedded Gecko and thereby completely give up the benefits of a downstream ecosystem - which includes any chance at having market share in the long term - a decade ago.Someone should certainly build an alternative to the Chromium engine, but nobody's managed to actually do it.

@atoponce we could have 4 modern engine families by now:- gecko- khtml- opera (presto i think)- edgeunfortunately opera and microsoft chose to just trash their engines instead of opening the source and went for chromium. firefox is so shitty by now it isn't funny anymore. at least they got female ceo who works for a fraction of the usual "compensation" in the industry so we should be grateful they killed all technical branches of mozilla and bought shitty services like pocket instead, so progressive.
