There is no option to delete the return I started without going through Free File. I can pay $70 or I can try again on a completely different site.Guess which I'm doing!Hint: it's not "give this sleazy tax prep site money."

Gave up on the "saving" screen and refreshed. Got it to restart, but cannot convince TaxAct to count the information entered on my 1099-MISCs as income. Wut.

Discovered that TaxAct had created two identical businesses and entered my expenses under one and income under the other. WHY.Deleted the duplicate business, re-entered expenses, yay fixed.

Bottom line!If your adjusted gross income (AGI) was $73,000 or less, you are eligible for FREE TAX PREP, regardless of how complicated your taxes are!Tax prep companies will 100% try to charge you!Go to https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile and pick an offer that works. CLICK THERE.

Do NOT Google for "free tax prep", or search in any other way for it! You will get directed to a site that claims to be free and then will probably tell you "oh, we have to charge you because [lie]."Don't go directly to a site that someone else told you works! It won't work.

You need to go to http://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile and click FROM THERE. If the tax prep site sees you are coming from anywhere else, they will try to charge you. Because America's tax system is the worst.Free tax prep is only required for FEDERAL taxes. State may or may not be free.

https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile is 100% the One Weird Trick Tax Prep Companies Don't Want You to Know.except it's not a weird trick, it's federal law, and tax prep companies are doing everything in their power to avoid complying. 😡
