I'm not sure if any of you follow the Peregrine Falcons that have nested on top of UC Berkeley’s Campanile over the past 6 years or so but I thought for those that do not, you might find this sad, yet heartwarming, story of interest.

A short time ago, we received tragic news that the male, Grinnell, was found dead not far from their nesting site in Berkeley. Amazing how these creatures can warm themselves into your heart. This life mating pair, Annie & Grinnell, have certainly done so to mine over the years so this was truly heartbreaking news.

It is assumed that with 2 eggs in their nest and a 3rd expected that morning, that Grinnell was protecting their territory from an invader and was either struck in the air, or killed in the air, by another falcon. He was hit by a car after having landed so it's hard to tell what exactly caused his death.

The tragedy hit us all very hard and the worry for Annie and her eggs became a potential second tragedy. The likelihood that the chicks would now hatch was dismal at best. Male falcons are the providers of food for the female as well as the chicks once hatched. Without the male to bring in food, Annie would have to abandon the nest in order to

hunt leaving the eggs to grow cold. Grinnell would give Annie a few breaks now & then but unlike with many other pairing birds, the providing chores fall solely to the male. The chances of Annie hooking up with a new male so she could remain on the nest this season wasn't good.

Alas, miracles do happen. Annie has a 'New Guy' and there is now a 4th egg in the nest which is believed to be 'New Guy's' chick. It appears there is a strong chance that Annie & Grinnell's chicks will now survive.Megan Fradley-Smith has written a beautiful Remembrance piece that I'd like to share with you. She has definitely captured what each of us have felt with the loss of Grinnell. You can read it here:https://goldengateaudubon.org/blog-posts/annie-grinnell-4eva/

There is a cute video of Annie & Grinnell from their 2020 season. A good amount of info about them as well as how wonderfully these two love birds were paired together is captured. 5 min video here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTNZmnD27is&t=309s

As a footnote ... I've been fascinated with Peregrine Falcons ever since the movie 'Falcon & the Snowman' was released. The security secrets that were being offered for sale in that movie included a project that my Dad was involved with. I guess it was a screwball way to try to connect the work that my Dad could never talk about with a level of 'reality'.

@Elaines2cents How fascinating that falcons only have two genders!I've been a fan of the Anacapa Island pair for many years.
