       in school, my English essays were always full of red ink because the teacher would correct all the American English spellings i had picked up online. i don't know what variety of English they teach school children these days but i assume it's still British English.

       @ericireland when i started high school they did let you choose but it's difficult for a child to make the choice. and the books have to standardise on one variety or the other, especially in elementary and middle school where the school provides the books.
