I've been having a bit of a clear out lately (both digital and physical) and it got me thinking.Do I really need all my bookmarks synced across all devices? Especially through the browser. It's not a curated list of bookmarks in the same way my website has (https://chriswere.wales/links.html).Do any of you folks sync your browsers across devices or do you manage your bookmarks another way? It's the one thing keeping me on Firefox over Librewolf.

@ChrisWere I sync browsers across devices but I don't really use bookmarks that often. I mostly use the synced history.

@ChrisWere Nope, I just use firefox focus on mobile and I'll collect useful links I want to revisit in a file called "links.md" where I can add notes on why I saved it in the first place as well. Each desktop install gets its own set of bookmarks as I find they become useful.

@architect I was thinking along the same lines. It seems a bit cluttered to have all links on all devices. A markdown file in my syncthing folder would work for the cross-platform stuff and everything else can have it's own set of links. Also, it seems a little insecure to have everything to readily linked up. Seems like there are a lot of vectors for potential security issues.

@ChrisWere As I use several laptops (different OSes) I sync everything in my browser (although I don't use the browser password store), but I don't like to use the account based syncing of Chrome or Firefox. I prefer the decentralized Sync from that other browser. And Syncthing for files, like old bookmarks export files when I start afresh every couple of years.

@ChrisWere Personally, I like having it in Sync as a pseudo-backup (on Mozilla's servers and my other devices) and just in case I do look for a desktop bookmark, but yeah, I rarely browse the same webpages.Last I read up on it, LibreWolf only tweaked a few things about Firefox, which extensions and config could also adjust. Does it do more now or are you just looking for a more community-developed alternative?

@ChrisWere I don't know of any security issues with bookmark sync, but I guess that depends on how you use them. Any important sites like banking, utilities, service subscriptions and the like are stored in my password manager, so there's no need for a bookmark. Then sites I use frequently I already have memorized, so I tend to use them for things like easily retrieving technical documentation or revisiting articles that were worth saving for some reason or another within the install's context

@ChrisWere No. I use my devices for different tasks at different times of the day, there's not s ton of overlap in bookmarks.

@friend I'm just curious what it would be like to use Librewolf as my primary browser and how my workflow would have to change to make it work.A more community-centric browser does appeal to me though. Particular one based on Gecko.

@ChrisWere I'm not using Librewolf on certain distros for this reason. On others it's because I have easy access to Abrowser or lack of a Librewolf mobile version. I could do without syncing them but at the same time it's hard to justify giving up the feature.

@ChrisWere I don't sync my browser bookmarks per se, I just use my mobile browser purely as a webpage renderer, if that makes sense. If I really need some links I have a git repo with my https://orgroam.com database from where I can get it, in addition to a single "Inbox" file that I sync between my computer and mobile through Syncthing.

@ChrisWere I just synch parts of my .config folder. That keeps bookmarks (and lots more) the same everywhere.

@ChrisWere I basically never use bookmarks. I do sync across devices, though.

@ChrisWere I just have seperate bookmarks on phone and PC. I'd like to have them synced, but with my current setup that's not possible, and i don't see that changing anytime soon.

@ChrisWere I really want to be able to browse seamlessly across devices within my home network. Is there a recommended solution/apps for that?

@ChrisWere I rely on https://pinboard.in/u:mikael, but it's more like a linklog (tagged and searchable). I keep my browser history for eternity and that kind of acts like browser bookmarks for me (auto-complete and that).

@ChrisWere For me, bookmarks are a "This is useful for now, i'll keep it for a while" and once it's usefulness has run out, I remove it. Bookmarks usefulness is device dependent usually so I don't sync them.

@ChrisWere Weird, a bunch of your recent posts only showed up in my notifications now but they're apparently 2 days old.As for bookmarks, I don't sink them. Most of mine are just one-offs that I keep on reserve for very specific things that I might need (but probably not).Sometimes I wonder if I should just make a small web directory on my site for keeping track of what's interesting to me. Then others might find useful links themselves if they stumble across the directory.
