Back then, it spoke to a level of polish, that they had opened their horizons beyond their grandpa's kentucky chicken ranch and put in a lot of work and study to learn abstract concepts, math, and a specialty. It seems pointless, but a well-rounded person with a deeper well of life experience always outperforms expectations for the strangest reason. Then again, it was a way to gatekeep the officer corps and make sure the guys leading the rabble were still in line with the ruling parties. Don't want too much strength resting in the hands of politically unvetted peasants.

Prior to the industrual-revolution, wealth outside of nobility was effectively unheard of.The wealth was also a continuing barrier. During the Napoleonic period it wasn't uncommon for a junior officer's annual mess bills to be greater than his wages (particularly if it was a prestigious regiment) meaning they needed an income outside of the army.Beyond that, even less noticeable items such as uniforms, weapons, horses etc. were paid for out of the officer's pocket rather than by the army/navy.

@stevetim @Ottovonshitpost @weaf It's some old cold war shit on how the russian military didn't have a career NCO Corps and leaned more on its commissioned officers for on the ground leadership. This means they didn't have there NCOs go to thing like infantry small unit leaders courses, Ranger school etc because the were all just conscripts that would be out in a couple years so why waste time on them. At least this how an old Master Sargeant of mine explained it to me. Might be boomerlore but it's been around for a hot minute.

Sure the aristocracy has always been in a "leadership role" but for the most part the people doing the real military shit were military men with years of experience as a soldier.

@weaf I do not know much about the military but from my experience playing the Call of Duty and watching the Mr. Forrest Gump movie, would it not be the lower ranked officers like the lieutenants and captains who will do the in between things between generals and enlisted men? And perhaps the sergeants may lead a small group of the privates? It seems that Russia has the equivalents to these rankings. The WW2 era force you have referenced is a product of the industrial age, rather than a hodgepodge of pre and post-industrial like Europe.Class distinctions were also much more sharply delineated in Britain than it seems like they were in the US (as an outsider looking in) and that carried over to the forces. Officers were gentlemen and enlisted were working-class/peasants.You also I suspect see the after-effects of the frontiersman spirit in WW1/WW2 era Americans.
