@Moon I dunno I like my Sakura Taisen one the way it is.You know Sega Channel actually sold official translucent shells (just for the top, so they look the colored controllers or that image) they're still floating around on Yahoo auctions for around the same price as a good third-party shell.

@coolboymew @Moon Yeah I did quite a mob job on mine. Reshelled the piss yellow beige case with a clear caseReplaced Orange power LED with blue LEDReplaced controller board fuse with a resettable fuse ( these can blow if plugging / unplugging controllers in while the console is powered on ) the resettable fuse allows you to power cycle the console to reset it. Replaced dying GD-ROM drive with a chinese GD-EMU clone boardRecapped power supplyRecapped motherboardreplaced 20 year old thermal pads with some high quality arctic thermal pads.

@coolboymew @Moon The only mod I didn't do but would love to do someday ( I didn't want to drill a $90 shell is the DC HDMI mod. the kit is like $130-150 and it allows the Dreamcast to output a 960p image via. upscale without input lag.

@Moon @coolboymew @ooignignoktoo I remember there being a replacement power supply to mod them with too. I never hardmodded my consoles but I am thinking about RGB modding a few and maybe SD mods for the saturn and DC, if I do go that far recapping them and/or replacing power supplies will be high on the priority list. I still have some original xboxes with untouched capacitors.

@Moon @coolboymew If I was gonna do the mod in 2022 I'd look into getting a MODE instead of a GD-EMU it has a better interface than the GD-EMUAnother thing to consider when doing dreamcast mods. The consoles that have a 1 circled on the back are the only ones that can use the GD-EMU mod. The 0 revision (Launch US dreamcast units, and Early Japan units can't do it), I think the 0 units are compatible with MODE though. But the later revisions circled with a 2 on the bottom of the shell are 100% incompatible with optical drive emulators for the time being. Luckily the version 1 is the most common model of console out there though but something to consider if you're shopping for one.

@slash @Moon @coolboymew They do sell conversion power supply kits for the dreamcast that allow you to use PICO ( external supplies ) but with PICO supplies you gotta make sure you find one that matches the right specifications of the dreamcast's power demands. There's also a lot of fake / knockoff pico chargers. PICO is useful if you want an external power supply that generates less heat in the system itself or if you're in a global region where you want to use a NTSC Dreamcast in a 220V pal region without a bunch of cables / fuss.Most modders recommend just recapping the stock open frame power supply because it's already rated for efficiency of the hardwares needs.

@ademan @Moon @coolboymew I bought my shell off here.https://www.game-tech.us/product/dreamcast-case/Price has gone down about $20 since I bought it they're now selling it for $70. The shells are about as quality as the OEM. Some dude in australia got their hands on the original dreamcast shell molds and has been reproducing them in an assortment colors. Way less hassle than retrobriting the original beige shell unless you really want stock for that extra nostalgia.

@internetfreak @Moon @coolboymew I soft modded an xbox awhile back but it's my brothers. Sadly I don't have an old PC floating around anymore with a PATA cable to mod/unlock the drives. I wanted to do an HDMI mod / recap / noctua fan mod / and replace the old thermal paste and upgrade the 40GB mechanical drive to a larger mechanical or ssd.

@slash @Moon @coolboymew yeah DreamPSU is the most popular PICO conversion board out there for dreamcasts. It's great if you got a bad psu that needs replacement. I just chose to re-cap my psu instead since it was still working solid and it was cheaper to do so. The stock dc handled the internal open frame nicely but paired with a noctua fan mod arctic thermal pads heat should not be an issue.

@ooignignoktoo @Moon @coolboymew I only managed to ever overheat my stock dreamcast once anyway, and that was an overnight attempt to clear a Shenmue 2 PAL import I’d somehow managed to get my hands on with a friend. Red screen on disk 3, and after I hit reset I never saw that again.

@slash @Moon @coolboymew The only issue I may have with the GDEMU is multi disk games. I gotta read up how to sort that. The only multi disk game on DC I got any interest in playing is D2 and i heard it's perforamnce on GD-EMU is iffy and that MODE was better for that. I may upgrade to a MODE down the road since it's not an overly complex conversion.
