So, Elon Musk has become a significant shareholder in Twitter. Jack Dorsey has said he regrets his role in centralizing the Internet. Net change? I'm guessing minimal. Twitter will keep sucking, and people will complain about Twitter sucking but use it anyway. OR, they could move to a better alternative like Mastodon. I realize I'm preaching to the choir posting about Mastodon on Mastodon, but still. Tell your friends.

@mike do you think that if people came to mastodon, would they be able to adapt? I guess we have better anti-abuse tools, but would that be enough? Or does any platform with that many people tend to chaos, and the "only" benefit would decentralization?

@mike New official apps will help some growth. I do agree that some will try Mastodon and still use Twitter. I use both but have really cleaned up the feed over there to make it useful. I need to invest more time here to appreciate it.

@mike More then Mastodon: The Fediverse.Micro-blogging alone we have Misskey and Pleroma as well. There are also Networks more fitting to substitute Facebook, for example. We need ostensive and permanent campaigns to get people out of commercial and evil plataforms. They are investing a huge amount of resource on propaganda. We need more media coverage, for example.

@cfcosta I do think people could adapt. I think that any platform with a population like Twitter's is going to be chaotic, but Twitter profits from that chaos and actually pushes it algorithmically. Without that push to chaos added in, I think the Fediverse would still be able to maintain a semblance of sanity compared to Twitter. Smaller, more focused communities would be even better than general instances like mastodon.social just due to moderation tools and a smaller community to moderate.

@mike It's quite fascinating to see people complain about centralized social media, and then refuse to leave the herd.

@mike Elon Musk :joker: is doing a bit of his own lately, well, he has always done it, now I find out that he has become one of the big investors in Twitter, but look at him, before he said that he should bet on decentralized models, with freedom of expression and a long etc ... but he stays on Twitter and invests in it, wow! Despite being a genius, he is not what I expected or at least the guru that was so much branded.Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

@mike "tell your friends without implying they are stupid/ignorant for using the Twitter."

The problem is that it's where all their contacts are. You can have the best platform in the world, but if nobody uses it, its usefulness is limited. This is why I try to encourage friends and family to use it, but it's hard to do without feeling like I'm proselytizing.

@me I agree, and it becomes a self perpetuating cycle. No one uses it because no one uses it. That's why I encourage you to start with friends and families. Your presence means they've got at least SOME foothold in the ecosystem. The more you can convince the more motivation others have to join.@wswartzendruber

@mike Some friends have written off all "social media" because that brand has become so tarnished by Twitter, Facebook, etc. They assume that Mastodon etc. will exhibit the same problems, which of course it does but only in the case of certain easily-avoided instances.

@mikeI'm not an expert on these matters by any stretch, but I've thought for a while that if Twitter were to simply migrate over to ActivityPub or GNUSocial it would change the Internet forever.Unfortunately Twitter has such a massive user base operating over such a long period of history that it would be virtually impossible to convert all of its post history and stuff, but maybe that stuff could be archived, idk.
