Long time followers will know that I installed /e/ on a Moto G4, as an experiment. I liked it so much that I immediately used it as my main 'phone. My (really) old Nokia N8, which I use as a music player in the car, is slowly dying (h/w problems). I intend to replace the N8 with the G4.This gave me the excuse πŸ˜ƒ to buy a new Moto G7 Plus. This will become my main 'phone. I really liked /e/. However, I just fancy experiencing something new.Hello, LineageOS.

Well, I've already wasted hours to-night getting the 'phone "OEM unlocked". It wasn't enough having to get the unlock code from Motorola. No, to enable the OEM Unlocking option the 'phone *must* also be connected to the Internet. This wasn't obvious to me (nor mentioned on the Motorola website). It also makes me wonder who is spying on me, Motorola or Google?Further progress towards #LineageOS will now have to wait until the weekend.Grrr!

@fitheach >It also makes me wonder who is spying on me, Motorola or Google?the mobile phone division of Motorola was owned by Google for a few years and sold to Lenovo in 2014 (a company which is equally bad for aggressive telemetry and at the very least wanting to keep track of what happens to the hardware, even "obsolete" items)

LineageOS (pre-built) comes with a minimal set of apps. This was part of the attraction, for me. The default apps are: Phone, SMS, Contacts, Browser, Camera, Gallery, and Music. There are several additional apps I require. You'll notice that the list doesn't include a "store" app. So, my first action was to include f-droid.org, which I installed via the browser.

It is possible for the user to build their own install image. This way the user can choose their precise mix of apps. As this was my first use of LineageOS, I decided to use one of the pre-built images. I installed version 18.1 of LineageOS, which is based on Android 11.If you want to build your own, the first step is to select your device, and then follow the precise instructions:https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/#LineageOS #Android #FOSS #FLOSS

I've nearly completed the setup of my new 'phone. However, I'm in seventeen minds about which browser to use. TBH I was a bit shocked that the default LineageOS browser is Chrome, with home set to Google. I got rid of that, quickly. For the time being (at least), I've installed Privacy Browser.Love to hear your thoughts on which browser you use, and why?https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.stoutner.privacybrowser.standard/#FOSS #FLOSS #Android #LineageOS

@fitheach I use Mull, after I broke Firefox by trying to modify the settings to make it more privacy oriented. Mull is a privacy hardened fork of Firefox.https://f-droid.org/en/packages/us.spotco.fennec_dos/

@rochelimit Thanks. I did see Mull (and I love the name), but, was a bit concerned about the "Anti-Feature" and the long list of permissions.

@fitheach FFF breaks the least websites in full privacy mode. Fennec works well with things like Flightradar24 and Marinetraffic and let's you pin a URL to the "desktop", turning websites into "apps". It's the only one that i allow to save my credentials as i only use it on trusted sites. Bromite is closest to Chrome for those sites that require it, but is still quite privacy-respecting with default incognito mode. PB is great for unknown websites I want to read with full shields up.

@fitheach Yeah, the permissions looks like a long list, but a browser needs to do a lot of stuff. (The 'Anti-feature' flags the upstream Firefox code, not necessarily the Mull code, which is likely to have those libraries removed.)

@fitheach when you're juggling browsers around its nice to be able to keep bookmarks separate. To that end the Visimarks bookmark manager is nice. I believe it's only available in the Play Store but doesn't require GMS so can be sideloaded. For a somewhat lengthy treatise on the whole applications-without-google thing: https://fedops.codeberg.page/ungoogling-my-computing-part-4.html

@fitheach I do, I tick a lot of the uBlock standard lists and have things like 'Block Intrusion into LAN' enabled, as well as 'Anti-Facebook'.I use a few 3rd party lists, like OISD and 'I don't care about cookies'.Every so often, I get a website that won't load and it's often related to the cookie block-list

Moving my SMS messages was the last step before I could move to the new 'phone. It was more difficult than it should have been. The messaging app on the old 'phone was a fork of QKSMS by /e/. However, the "Backup" button was inoperative.I installed QKSMS on both 'phones, did a backup, and then restored on the new' phone. I'm going to keep QKSMS for messaging on the new 'phone.Weird thing: I couldn't send the SMS backup file via Bluetooth. I had to rename the .json extension to .txt. Eh?

I'm really liking Privacy Browser on my 'phone. It allows settings per domain, so, it is like having uMatrix built-in to the browser.I haven't had any websites that wouldn't load
