@Gina They're total garbage. The software setup process is horribly convoluted and prone to failure and post installation, network printing is prone to break. I receive more calls for HP related issues than any other brand by far.

@Gina I used to have one. Currently I have a Canon G2000, and ironically it's pretty much only usable from Linux because the drivers for Windows are awful and for Mac are nonexistent. Pretty good for Linux users, though, I'd recommend it. (Realistically, you'd probably want a later-generation model, they seem better.)

@Gina HP will also brick printers that use 3rd party ink via firmware updates. My most popular blog post is about how I was able to work around this, but I will never buy their products again. https://www.rickscully.com/2020/how-to-downgrade-hp-printer-firmware-via-ftp/

@swansinflight @Gina @SonoMichele Man, I wish the open source cabal would tackle printers. I would kill for a well-running, pro consumer printer powered by open source. I'd even buy the first party ink (or just buy it for what it's really worth).

@Gina I have on from 14 years ago that's not terrible, though that may be the exception. But they can't be worse than Lexmark inkjets. Because *nothing* can be worse than Lexmark inkjets.

@Gina I have always had HPs from the Officejet series and never had an issue with them (no enforced stuff, excellent Linux support, etc.). However, mine is from before the HP Smart app stuff, it has it, but not enforced. Mine is a HP Officejet Pro 8715, first party ink is okay'ish regarding to price, prints easily the same amount amount as a laser (has giant ink tanks), double sided, ethernet/wifi, etc.It seems HP went down a different path since then, since I heard the similar complains

@Gina @Gargron And it's quite a gift for the wallet when you don't print that much, thanks to the ink powder : I've had my Brother for 6 years and I've changed the toner once

@danslerush @Gina @Gargron Using a brother laser as well, no complaints here.Used to have a HP and spent more on ink per year than a new printer + ink would have been.....

@Gina I have been echoing this recently and in the last few years: https://mastodon.sdf.org/@joeo10/107981131068577844Also, read Cory Doctorow's (@pluralistic) piece on HP printers from November 2020: https://pluralistic.net/2020/11/06/horrible-products/#inkwarsYeah, it's best to get a much consumer-friendly printer like Brother, which I jave bene using for years now.

@Gina i've seen inkjet printers do this when you print a black image in color, it's probably worth checking the software on both ends (the source device and the actual printer)also check for any "ink saving" features and maybe disable them

@Gina If you dont use the HP Smart App, you can scan just fine without Account. On Windows use the Windows Scan app. On Linux simple-scan (or any other sane based app) is your friend.

@Gina plus if you buy the HP+ products, you are required to connect them with an HP account and they have to stay online and call back to their HP servers regularly or they lock out printing functionality...learned that the hard way.
