@alexOnce again I'm reminded how few children's authors are shared between the UK and USA.Three quarters of these sound like Markov chain output to me.

@priryo @alex I suspect some of that might be because of the difficulty of wordplay translation. Can't tell you how many Americans I've heard singing Itsy Bitsy Spider and not rhyming "rain" with "again".

@johnThat could be part if it, yeah. Every word is important in a good picture book. There are some books where the rhymes don't translate north of London, either.I think another facet has to be the importance of the mundane details as well. So many books have utterly normal situations (that may or may not go weird) for kids to recognise themselves in.So Alfie books by Shirley Hughes, not particularly tricky words, should translate, but the gorgeous illustrations are so redolent of Britain in the early 80s that maybe it's not relatable elsewhere?@alex
