If there was one choice for Linux desktop environment that all effort went into, we'd probably all be using Unity right now...

@gaurdianaq Around 2010, Ubuntu had a level of dominance in the desktop Linux space that is not even close to the situation today.Canonical was very good at bringing in new users and providing a decent user experience, at a time when Linux was rougher around the edges. There was also this idea of convergence, that smartphones and desktop computers would merge and you'd be using the same software across both.Unity was part of Canonical's ill fated attempt to achieve convergence with Linux.

@gaurdianaq In an alternative universe where we put all our Linux desktop environment eggs in one basket, it's almost certainly the case that Canonical's leadership at that critical juncture would have led us towards Unity being the Linux desktop. It was the variety available to Linux users that allowed people to ignore Canonical and vote with their feet, which eventually made it clear that Unity wasn't particularly popular.

@gaurdianaq The other major possibility is that Gnome 3 would have been the winner in this winner-takes-all scenario, though it probably would have been dragged in an even more Unity-like direction.
