immigrants, no matter where they're coming from or going to, were rarely the cream of the crop of their home country. it's all the rural and lower class strugglers you get, usually. that's the main challenge with handling immigration, really. you get poor people with poor people problens. and if they come from countries with bigger class differences than your own, they're gonna have even more issues than your own poor. if they come from war-ravaged countries, it's even worse.

@thor I am really impressed by your eloquent & deep anthropo-sociological nonsense analysis. You're serious, mate?

@thor Just look at the difference between founding stock settler Anglos/Scots in America vs Central/Eastern European peasantry that immigrated in the late 19th and early 20th century. The settler/immigrant dichotomy

@Vril_Oreilly that sounds like a history lesson - don't really have detailed knowledge of the waves of immigration

@thor I have anecdotal datapoint(s) to support a completely opposite statement: it takes a significant effort to immigrate, and so only smarter and more hardworking people than average do. 1. One my American friend used to think that Chinese are smarter and more hardworking people than average. Then she visited China, and changed her opinion. 2. Of the people I know in Ukraine, only those who had some prior connections abroad, left. Those who did not, stayed. (And many of those who did, stayed anyway). Those who left, have the skills/aptitude to support themselves in the country they moved to.(This last item is, of course, biased by the fact that I am a middle-class person, and so most my connections are also middle-class)@ZySoua

@anton @ZySoua it helps to be in America. it's got a reputation for being a place you migrate to if you're ambitious. and also for being fiercely competitive.
