Is it a good idea to keep an HDD connected to a raspberry pi server?I feel weird about letting it spin for so long but maybe its actually normal and I am just ignorant?#askfedi #askmastodon #askfosstodon

@joelNo different to any other application of a hard drive. You could set it to spin down when it's not being used.

@joelI have a HDD on a pi and... it doesn't keep spinning? I hear it crank itself up when a backup gets triggered. So I guess it is fine and the pi sleeps / wakes it at the right times.

@joel @sotolf @joel You could use autofs which will automatically mount your drive only when you access it. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Autofs#Removable_media
