@thor I guess it's not for everyone, depends on what your usage is like and what kind of workflow you like. I've been daily driving desktop Linux for a while. I switched because Win10 annoyed me so much and I don't regret it.

@dushman just to name an example: if you're using a basic office mouse, you can't reduce the mouse DPI. on all DEs i have tried, the slider only adjusts acceleration. on other platform, that slider is a hybrid of two things:1. software-based DPI scaling2. acceleration adjustment having never owned a gaming mouse (these seem to more often support the HW command for DPI adjustment) i don't know if the UI actually attempts to be a hybrid on Linux too, but simply fails because the mouse doesn't support it, or if they just neglected that option.on the X.org level, there is an API call for the sensitivity, but this relies on HW support.there is a workaround, but you have to run a script whenever a mouse is plugged in that changes an xinput coordinate transformation matrix to scale the raw input properly. this is equivalent to what other OSes do out of the box in the GUI already.and makers of Linux distributions apparently don't give a fuck about this at all, so each time i set up a Linux system, i always have to fuck around with the CLI and scripts for the mouse to feel comfortable to use.

@dushman so right off the bat, minutes into using any Linux DE, there is already something that doesn't work properly for me.why does this problem exist? my theory is:1. i've noticed that many people love extremely fast mouse settings that would strain my hand 2. many Linux devs probably have gaming mice where the DPI setting is adjustable in HW

@dushman typical response if i don't carefully explain the problem: just use the slider me: no, that slider doesn't do what i want it to and doesn't work like it does on Windows and macOS on the same hardware

@dushman it's often annoying little details like that, and Linux rarely gets those details right. a more major issue is that the FOSS alternatives to the software i like to use (mostly creative tools) aren't up to the task, made strange design choices, or are just plain unstable.

@dushman note: after the switch to macOS, there are now things i would miss even on Windows, so if anything, it has raised the bar even higher

@thor Iirc Cinnamon has a proper sensitivity setting. And yeah I just use a mouse with HW adjustable DPI.

@dushman pretty sure that still relies on X, which relies on HW for the sensitivity, which only works if the HW supports it, as i already said...

@dushman i.e. that sensitivity slider does nothing if your mouse doesn't support it, whereas Windows/macOS don't rely on that HW support for it

@thor I read it. I just thought cinnamon didn't rely on HW support for it. That DE relies on X though so that makes sense. I wonder if it's any different with Wayland.

@dushman you might argue that the problem is X, which is supposed to handle this, and X exposes a sensitivity setting, so that's what the DEs use.on the X end of things, however, they seem to consider this a HW functionality that they expose, and it's not their job to provide it if it isn't there.

@dushman on other OSes, there's a guy in charge to tell the devs to fix it, because the users don't care about implementation detailsmajor weakness of FOSS ecosystems is situations like this, where everybody's just blaming everybody else and there is no arbitrator.

@dushman a workaround might be to have all the DEs use the workaround i use, but it's ugly, and the setting in question isn't really designed for SW emulation of that feature. it's just a hack. it scales the raw mouse movement values before they hit anything else.

@dushman all of this makes more sense if you consider that X is what handles mouse input, not the desktop environment, so they're all just changing X settings.
