I recently read through "Information Doesn't Want to Be Free" by Cory Doctorow (with forewords by Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer!), and many mentioned instances of tech overreach are stuck in my head. Not to mention success stories of creators and non-DRM creations.A thread 🧵(1/x)#copyright #copyfight #creativecommons

Fans loved Harry Potter so much that they would create and translate ebook versions of the books, quickly after release, and share online worldwide (there were no official ebooks). By the time the last book was released, it took less than 24 hours for community-generated ebook to appear and only a few days for the first translation. The reaction? Rowling released DRM-free ebook editions for purchase directly through Pottermore, which was a big deal! (6/x)#drmfreehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottermore

The book mentions Sony BMG Records and the rootkits they included on audio CDs back in 2005. One thing I didn't know about was how other malware made use of how the rootkit was masking processes that started with a specific string. What eventually came of this? Sony BMG offered clean CDs for impacted users and paid them up to $150 for damages (2007). Sony was told: stop installing spyware. Hiding software, killing processes, and secretly harvesting info for ads = bad. What eventually came of this? Lawsuit showed school laptops collected 58,000+ images (mix of photos and screenshots) from student laptops, but the true total was over 66,000+ (due to what had been deleted before investigation).Money? A $610,000 settlement.More lawsuits sprang up as families were notified that the collections of images included photos of their kids. Then there was that time in 2009 when a student was accused of popping pills. The evidence? A recording of him, through his school-issued laptop webcam, when he was at home eating Mike and Ike candy! Parents and students were like yo, wat?Interesting enough, one parent is quoted as saying they should side with the school because of financial concerns of lawsuits.
