X, in 2000: clientside rendering and uploading bitmaps through SHM sucks, and makes GNOME horrible over the network, let's make XrenderWayland, in 2010: everyone (GNOME) uses OpenGL now to render on the client side and upload bitmaps through DMAbufs which are totally not SHM, and totally not horrible over network. Let's just make that the only way to render because why would anyone need anything else

I still think Wayland a cleaner way forward but it's kinda ironic how we're back to shoving bitmaps over SHM.

@chozu yeah I know. I'd expect thinga like cairo, and toolkits built on top of them, can gently switch between OpenGL, Xrender, and software rendering, based on what's available. But the premise of my post wad that everyone uses DMAbufs with X anyway so why not make it the only option, while also making a dig at GNOME for assuming everyone == GNOME.

@wolf480pl Most UI doesn't get sent through network though

@Mek101 yeah but X forwarding over ssh is one of X's unique adventages.IOW, I don'y usually need to use GUI over network, but when I do, being able to do so saves a lot of time.

@wolf480pl True. But also there already are a bunch of solutions and stuff for UI over the network. Eg VNC and rpc
