@brainwane WD40 is so named from "Water Dispersant". Please don't use it for any type of lubrication duty. Please, God, don't spray it into a lock! Think of it as a solvent which leaves a gummy residue which will get harder with time. Cleanup after use is NECESSARY.For liquid lubrication, use oil. To reduce friction on an exposed metal surface, use grease. For locks, use purpose-made powdered graphite.

@vandys @brainwane sorry but wd40 actually works really well in vehicle ignitions. don't knock it til you've tried itit's not a good substitute for grease due to solvent content but it definitely does have oil content and has lubricating propertiesi get annoyed when people try to pretend like it's not also a lubricant. WD40 haters will lecture you about never using it for this and that but it's very stupid and ignorant

@Agartha_Noble @brainwane @vandys it smells so good. there is this cottage industry of lecturing people online about not using WD40 for stuff but with a little bit of thought, you can determine when it's appropriate and when it isn't. it's great for car ignitions due to its dielectric properties where you can't use graphite because graphite is conductiveit's also very good for cleaning metal parts that are already corroded if you soak an abrasive pad with it then wipe cleanwhat it's not good for is lubricating stuff where you need the lubricant to stay put for a long time, this is where you need grease

@meowski @brainwane @vandys It's all in the use-case. It was originally developed for the Atlas rockets to keep the metal skin from corroding.

@Agartha_Noble @brainwane @vandys i also use it as a lubricant for drilling and cutting sometimes

@meowski @brainwane @vandys Ooo, I never thought of that. For stuff like aluminum and brass, it's probably perfect- tapping, too actually. Have you tried that with steel?

@Agartha_Noble @brainwane @vandys it does work for drilling but tapping is a special case. yes it probably is ok for tapping but due to the fact that breaking a tap is such a huge pain in the ass, i always use a thicker oil for tapping to give myself every possible chance not to break it
