*sighs* :phoenixSigh:I have no idea what's wrong with my laptop. Whenever I try to turn it on, it turns on the status lights as usual, spins up the CPU fan after a few seconds and doesn't spin it down, and then either remains in that state with the display turned off or it will shut itself down after another few seconds :blobcatThinking:What I've already checked is to remove everything plugged into it (the power supply, an external HDD, a flash drive, an SD card, a mouse, keyboard and display), but this yielded exactly no changes in the behavior.I also opened the laptop up, did some basic cleaning and verified if there were any loose connections but couldn't find any. Removed the NVMe disk, same behavior. Put the NVMe disk back in, no changes. Closed the laptop back up, same results :blobcatShrug:Currently, the laptop is just standing on my disk with its CPU fan running at full power without the device actually doing anything. It also does not respond to any input save for powering it off by holding the power button for a few seconds :blobcatOno:Does anyone here have any suggestions what I could check and/or try to make the laptop reach the boot screen at the very least?Boosts would be very much appreciated :blobcatHeart:

@mezzodrinker try forcing a cmos reset by disconnecting both the battery and the bios battery, leaving the laptop without any power at all for 30s - 60s

@NHG Doesn't look like that changed anything... I also checked if it started up with either of the two batteries disconnected, but the laptop refused to do anything altogether until I connected both the battery and the CMOS battery.

@mezzodrinker This state means it's failed to POST, no? That sounds like a motherboard issue. If the software fixes (resetting bios/cmos) don't help, it might just be a hardware issue.

@cirno This state means it's failed to POST, no?I would assume so, but I can't give you a definite answer here due to a lack of information on my end.If the software fixes (resetting bios/cmos) don't help, it might just be a hardware issue.Yeah, that's likely. Though it happened from one day to another with the laptop just doing some computations in the background, so it would kind of surprise me. I might try to replace the RAM (because a faulty RAM module can cause the POST to fail, if I'm not mistaken), but... I feel like I might need to replace the laptop altogether, which is a shame.

@mezzodrinker @cirno You should try swapping the RAM sticks to a pair that you know is functional. If it still fails to POST then the CPU and/or mobo is shot.

@dushman @cirno Yep, hence why I thought about replacing the RAM module. The only issue with that is that I don't have a compatible stick lying around, so I'll have to get one first :blobcatSmileSweat:

@mezzodrinker @cirno Would be a bit of a waste if it doesn't work. Does it have two slots? If it does try either stick in either slot.

@mezzodrinker @cirno If nothing else works. You could also try to directly flash the BIOS chip with the latest stable BIOS for your mobo but you need a raspi or a dedicated flash tool for that.

@thatbrickster Hrm. I have not, but the thermal line from the CPU to the fan also doesn't feel particularly warm to the touch. It's about at room temperature, maybe slightly higher than that. Still, I should have some thermal paste lying around somewhere, so let me just try that too. Can't hurt.

@mezzodrinker Well yeah it is, can potentially save a bricked motherboard though. Unless the required hardware is more expensive than a replacement mobo then getting a new one would be preferable. You'd want to rule out everything else before trying that.

@dushman @thatbrickster And yeah, from what I can tell, it did. The laptop is configured to run BOINC tasks with ~20% CPU and had been up for a week or two since the last reboot. I haven't used it for a few days until I wanted to check something yesterday evening and noticed that the display didn't show anything (neither the external nor the internal one). So, attempt to shut it down, had to force it to power off, and here we are.Again, I wouldn't say I did anything that's particularly over-the-top.

@mezzodrinker @thatbrickster Could potentially be physical mobo failure, blown capacitor, etc. or a dead RAM module. Kinda hard to tell though. How much would it cost you to get a compatible RAM stick with the same specs?

@dushman @thatbrickster The same module costs $72.99, but since (a) I don't want to wait for a delivery from the US and (b) this is probably not the cheapest one available, it's likely less than that. Ballpark estimate: Somewhere around $50 or so, probably less.I mean, it certainly is less than buying a whole new laptop, but...
