Goodmorning #fediverse! β I'm looking at electric cars today. π I'm considering trading my beautiful but gas guzzling 2008 Suzuki Jimny for the Dacia Spring Electric.Does anyone have experience with using an electric car for long distance driving? I'd mostly use drive in and between cities, but I'd also like to take a long trip across Europe this summer πThe car: https://ev-database.org/car/1319/Dacia-Spring-Electric #ev #electriccars #tesla

@Gina I have - for longish distances in the UK. It depends on the charging infrastructure where you are. I used the i3 Rex which has a small back-up petrol engine. That was more for psychological comfort - as it turns out that everywhere I went had decent chargers.Zap Map is the best place for seeing what facilities are available.

@Gina The thing is, it's actually cheaper and less polluting if you switch from petrol to bio-ethanol. You pretty much just need to get sorghum syrup for brewing alcohol and a little distillery setup. It can even be mixed it with regular petrol. For diesel engines you can just get the used oil from the fryers and filter it into like a plastic storage tank.

@GinaI think it shouldn't be a problem in the Netherlands.Of course, it also depends on the range and charging speed of the car.You should use an app that shows you charging options. #fediverse #ev #electriccars

@wuwei I'm not that bothered by the safety rating, since my current car is a death machine as well. What made me just now decide not to go for the Dacia is that it apparently takes forever to get to 100km p/h, even longer than my Suzuki Jimny - aka even more anxiety about getting up to speed fast enough to merge onto the highway (highway ramps are VERY short in this country). π

@Gina Long distance driving a modern EV is more painless than you may think. you can find an overview of test done by Bjorn Nyland here https://www.carblogger.nl/1000km-test-elektrische-auto/Beware! The base model Dacia Spring only comes with a 6.6kW charger. You need to pay extra if you want the 34kW (maximum) fast charging option. Even this faster option is still extremely slow by EV standards. Most modern EVs come with 50kW to 150kW fast charging.

@Gina With the savings in gas, it might be worth it to rent a gas car for a few weeks to take longer trips. Or temporarily swap cars with a friend.

@Gina Here in North America, it seems like the Hyundai Ioniq has been getting good reviews with decent range and such.

@Gina Longer Trips could be planned as IKEA hopping (esp with kids), there are chargers on every IKEA parking lot. Sadly a limited number, and sometimes blocked by parking cars or defective.

@Gina if the #environmental factor is of any concern, then the best thing you could do would probably be to prolong the life of your current car...

@Gina I recently bought an Electric Hyundai Kona. Here in Australia charging infrastructure is growing slowly around our highways and innercity areas. In the suburbs not so much - charging at home is still the cheapest place (especially with Solar Panels). The reality of EVs is that they are most efficient around town where breaking regeneration is available. I get close to 500kms out of a 100% charge. On the highway that drops to around 300km on ECO mode.

@cee @Gina I actually would try this myself but none of the cars I drive are mine, but I would let my parents know in case things get really bad.
