@General_Ursus Russia has not "taken a beating" they've just been unable to achieve quick victory at an acceptable level of civilian casualties. They could have flattened Izyum two weeks ago, they didn't, they still could but won't, now the war moves into a somewhat more protracted phase. Modern urban warfare is absurd, and really, modern infantry kit is just not made for it on a certain level. So literally laying the cities to siege, and going around them so they can't act as strongholds for enemy counter-attacks is the correct way. Is it flashy and quick? No. Does it work and avoid a beating? Hell yeah it does.

@General_Ursus Russians have losses, no one is denying that, but a lot of the videos circulating now are from earlier in the war, also there can be multiple videos of the same action being portrayed as different actions. The reason why this battle is happening now is because it is the Ukrainians' last chance at preventing encirclement in the Donbass. If the Russians withdraw that just relieves (for now) some of the pressure on the cauldron in the east. Operations continue in the south and north and the former is hours-to-days away from being able to redirect attention away from Mariupol

That was something I didn't anticipate (probably few people did) but it speaks to the nature of 5GW as it interacts with modern urban population structures

@DK_Dharmaraj @General_Ursus Can those Ukranian forces even really retreat? I mean when they break position, they are a huge target for artillery and air forces. They had an opportunity to retreat before and didn't take it. My guess was it was due to what i just said and/or embedded political officer types. There have been reports of Azov opening fire on retreating AFU guys, and executing the COs of retreating units.

That sort of environment is too chaotic to avoid heavy casualties on both sides and negates a lot of technological and training advantages.
