People who develop their own #fediverse platforms: how did you find the energy to start it, and keep going?I ask because I've always wanted to start my own thing, but my focus is all over the place.

@dashie I always liked your project, though. It was really cool, and I felt bad about not promoting it enough. You did great work.

@sean@social.deadsuperhero.com I've been thinking of building a misskey fork, but it's difficult for me to even get started. For me though the absolute killer is the lack of time. I think that's one of the most important things to have with such a project, that you have enough time for it to actually properly focus on it for an extended period of time without constantly having to switch back to work or other things.

@sean I know exactly what you mean here, and have the same issue. It is the nature of the type of activity I do, where I find the advocacy very important, but it continues to distract me from things that may be more important to me in the long run.

@humanetech Advocacy is certainly a strength! I think it's very important for growing the network, and I think for some people, it can come very naturally. For me, I think my frustration stems from having a decent amount of skill and a broad focus of deep interests. I can maintain a laser focus for a while, but I gradually shift towards other things. It's in my nature, and drives me crazy.I feel like building a fediverse platform that aligns with the things I imagine for it could be a really amazing experience, though.

@sean I think there's no silver bullet here. If you'll allow me to blow some smoke up my ass, I think it's mostly work ethic and persistence. Even though the enthusiasm for my idea of a federated link aggregator has subsided in the three-four years since I've started working on it, I still find interesting things to do. I'm only sad that the state of the ecosystem when I began was so deplorable that I had to invent my own versions for everything along the way (partly why it took this long).

@mariusor Yeah, I think that makes sense. The technology that the network is built on has gotten a lot better over time, but it's taken a while to build solutions that overcame the limitations of whatever came before. It's still kind of messy, and there's still a lot to be desired...but, the overall philosophy over time seems to be "build crappy thing first using crappy tools, then gradually evolve into something less crappy."Somewhere along the way, things have gotten pretty good!

@sean well, that last part is the reason for my advocacy, as I feel that for Fediverse to come to its full potential it is essential that it progresses much further than it is now and that that requires a concerted and highly collaborative effort. And that many going-it-alone approaches won't be able to open the full potential that exists right now (and maybe not later on, as the fedi is rife for disruption by the wrong forces, imho).

@sean not sure promoting it -more- would have helped.I did try multiple times, but fossbro mentality always ruin any effort.

@sean so I sacrifice some of the 'laser focus' to hopefully inspire collaborative action. But I don't know the extent to which I am effective in doing so 😅

I'm not working on my own platform, but I am working on a client. It has been really slow getting started with it. Web development is just complicated. I can build pretty impressive desktop applications in .NET in a few weeks, but web development is SLOW. Especially if you know what you're doing and care alot about detail, it's even slower.

@sean My initial impetus was to create something that I wanted to exist, and that's been sustained as more people have began contributing. People have been overwhelmingly kind and positive towards me and the project in the space, which makes it easy to stay in it.But I also think a lot of the answer is that I have a lot of free time, available emotional and intellectual energy, and security as a result of luck and privilege.

@sean There are also procedural things that I find helpful. Working incremetally in manageably sized, self-contained tasks makes a big difference for me. I do a lot of not letting the prefect be the enemy of the good or preferring to do somthing now rather than do it perfectly. And interpersonally, having a system for handling conflict directly and in a way that gives me a sense of resolution.

@sean I'm not working on my own project of course, but still. I only really was able to get more into pleroma dev during times where I only worked 4 days/week instead of 5. Then when I had to work 5 days/week again, my MR's just staled because either there was something else I needed to do first, or simply because I couldn't find the focus/energy. Eventually I decided to work 4/5ths and now I can focus on it much more again. If working less per week wouldn't have been an option, I simply wouldn't be able to do that.

@dvn probably not! 😂 But, I think many of them qualify under "Community project that's big enough and active enough to have users, devs, and a laundry list of development tasks"

@sean Marketing. The fake-it-till-you-make-it mentality incentivized progress at the expense of "missed deadlines", in the end it worked out.Being able to quickly context switch is important, don't see it as not having focus.
