Oh, and the gas increase has now arrived as expected. The two together is just obscene. I need a pay rise just to survive at this point.

@kev until 6 years ago I used to live in north Italy where I paid the heating for 2 apartments using LPG. My yearly bill was 6K+ euro just for heating. So I migrated to a warmer country @gray

@fedops @gray gas & electricity. We have 4 fish tanks and a hot tub, so they don’t help.

@fedops @kev @gray Wanna know what's worse? I pay 9 cents per KWh and pay the same per year. Besides $20k in Windows and $30k+ in insulation and siding there isn't much I can do. I could heat with wood pellets I suppose

@Jase @kev @mike My partner thought this was the second increase. When I told her the second was still to come, she thought I was wrong.I’m just going live in a candle lit room and wear more clothing when that second one hits. Or move into the office…

@gray @kev @mike I decommissioned my homeserver and unnecessary network components to save around 45 watts an hour.45watts an hour over the course of the year (8 is 394.2 kWh - based on ('hours in use' x 'kilowats per hour') there are 8160 hours in a a non leap yeari.e: (24hrs/day x 365days) x (45watts/1000) = 394.2 kWhMy unit price is 20.40p per kWhMy years homeserver/decommissioned electrical items usage in pence for the year is 394.2 x 20.04 = 8041.68pWhich if my math holds up means saving of around £80.41p per year (based on my providers historical use based quoted amounts) Where I can I'm moving a lot of my homeserver's functionality to my 'always free' Oracle cloud and let them pay it for me lol

@Jase @mike @gray I just totted it up. Our hot tub and fish tanks are running @ 4000 watts in total. 2,500 of that is the tub, which is off most of the time (we turn the heater on the day before we go in). That’ll be why our bills are very high. 😳

@Jase @mike @gray yep. Not to mention the cost of running pumps 24x7 and doing 50% water changes every week. Oh, then there’s water conditioner (to remove chlorine) water tests, decorations, plants and of course, fish. It’s an expensive hobby 😂

@kev well, it's not extremely cold. Nothing to do with continental weather typical of Eastern European countries which are hit directly by wind coming from Siberia and Poland. Let's say that rarely it plumbs below -10C. Of course the North is colder than the South: long country so latitude varies a lot. South can be cold. Dolomites and Alps can obviously be very cold. Generally speaking the problem is taxation on fuel which rises the price so high that a warm house can be luxury @gray

@kev there is one good outcome from this: most of new houses have A++ energy rate which means that they basically self sufficient and the yearly utility bills should be close to zero. Among the countries I've been so far Italian houses are the best by several orders of magnitude in terms of quality, beauty and isolation. However only a small fraction of the total is A. Many are G which leads to several thousand euro/year in heating costs. This led to strong depriciation of old houses@gray

@kev @fedops @gray Most people do. A lot of places in the USA have different rates for the day and night too. I don't. Some other areas near me are around 3 cents/KWh. That's where the Bitcoin people go
