How many computers is too many computers for someone to own?

@kzimmermann I have privat exact 2 (Mobile Phone + Tablet) and Business 2 (Mobile Phone + Notebook) so about 4...Most people think only classic PC count...But all oft those need energy local as device and spread over the world for cloud, mobile & wired networks & & & and causing lot of indirect energy consumption. That much more people ignore.

@kzimmermann I wouldn't put a hard number on it. Instead, I'd say that signs of trouble include* Spending money (even worse: borrowing money) for equipment you don't truly need* Hoarding equipment you'll never use again* Never being satisfied with what you have* Abandoning equipment that still works because you crave the newest shiny thing* Obsessing about computers to the detriment of things that matter more, such as human relationships, work performance or financial security

@kzimmermann think it's more the question what the environmental cost is, and that depends quite a lot on the computers.Hoarding antiques which you turn on occasionally barely registers, but lots of new stuff or running a few things at high power costs a lot.I am also a bit hesitant? Like if people really work on electronics, maybe it's like their craft, that should count. As well as the pointlessness of sparing resources when armies and shit use a lot.. and may just nuke the world..

@vilbi you're spot on about the energy consumption. You can only recycle and prevent *additional* energy consumption to a certain extent re-using and procuring used machines to not have to spend it manufacturing a new one, but that's pretty much about it.Do you plug it in a wall outlet? Does it have batteries? Then it's contributing to the overall pollution of the planet. Servers are even more dirty since they have environmental cooling requirements, etc

@markusl > * Hoarding equipment you'll never use againGuilty of it myself, and I'd bet that so are 80% of the people who answered this poll! You're right, though: there is such thing as computers being a hobby, but it can definitely roll into an unhealthy obsession. I'm not saying everyone has to be a minimalist, but we all need to consider the limits.(At least for me 90% of what I own was either found #dumpsterdiving or handed to me by friends or family, so no money issues there)

@pleb you know, part of me wishes one day to deploy every single piece of computer hardware I have in a room and create some kind of LAN house / computer lab. Maybe even open up the space as a hackers' lounge / learning place. The only thing I'm missing is a network switch large enough

@jasper @kzimmermann I only regularly use about 5 devices (including mobile phones, tablets), there is an Asterisk server running in my house for telephones, but I keep other older working computers that are occasionally used for experimental systems, or obsolete ones recovered from work that I wipe the hard drives on and donate to the studios of the community radio stations (so those ones aren't powered up and using electricity most of the time)

@vfrmedia > ... obsolete ones recovered from work that I wipe the hard drives on and donate to the studios of the community radio stationsWhat a hero! The largest charity I've ever done in this sense was refit some machines for some few relatives curious about learning Linux. Donating back to a community must feel amazing!

@jasper @kzimmermann there are also work-related reasons I carry more than one mobile phone; one is a backup that provides an LTE link for traffic info on my satnav and has 2 SIMs as a business continuity measure so I can hopefully still get online if the wired Internet (or one mobile network) should fail..

@kzimmermannImportent is to be aware that any IT Use - even when it looks so smart ;-)is following a universe principlesNew needs natural resources, re/longer use and proper recycling helpsAny use consumpts energy and comes on top of energy needed for production, so less devices and less IT just 'heating' helps. So the use of less and smaller devices helps. And using a PI as PC and Server is :-) @lars

@kzimmermannFirst we need a definition of "computer".Today every oven or toaster contains something I'd call a computer.

@kzimmermann I have 2 desktops and a notebook. I basically never have 2 PCs ruining at once. So if this is about the environment. I don't think a unwillingness to throw PCs out is a detriment. But I do think that more than 5 is probably silly. As for phones and such it's similar. I have a old smartphone I basically only use for calls. And that way one charge lasts for weeks.Computers are useful people shouldn't throw them away.

@kzimmermann Er... is now the time to admit that my BBC Micro from 1981 is still sitting in the attic somewhere? 😄 Dual floppy drive, 128K of sideways Ram — all mod cons!I think the real dangers are mental, rather than physical. If your dining table is permanently strewn with bits of old hardware then that's a symptom, not a cause. Conversely, if you can spend a day with friends or loved ones and not wish you were at home with your computers then you're probably okay.

@kzimmermann More than five. This is why I think Red Hat's limit of 16 computers for the free #RHEL subscription to be totally fair, and why I use RHEL instead of Rocky.

@kzimmermann what's your definition of a "computer" and "own" ? Do you mean as in a laptop, or can it be a raspberry pi, a phone too? what about IOT devices? I "adopted" several laptops throughout the years, I probably have 5 laying around. I don't use them, but as far as I know I still could.. does this mean I still own them if I don't use them? :)
