@syntacticsugarglider that could be interesting, the netbook I plan to use it on is very weak and has a tiny screen, I could set it up with my awesomewm thinger like I use on my phone

@izaya debian for BS-free usage, alpine for a more streamlined and lighter OS, albeit at a little more setup work. The BSDs are still around, too, btw.(Disclaimer: I've never tried either slackware or NixOS)

@mdhughes I'd do something weirder but (while I haven't tried NetBSD specifically) nothing seems to do power management as well as Linux and I'm going to be running this on a netbook so I'd like to minimise power usage

@izaya I haven't tried it on mobile hardware, but NetBSD has good power management by ACPI, it ought to Just Work when turned on:https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-power.html

@izaya I run Slackware 15 on my old 32 bit desktop tower, and I like it! I've had issues with Slackpkg working, but that also might be a problem I'm having just on my machine. I also used Raspberry Pi OS and it worked really well, so Debian would probably be great as well

okay so given opus is impractical power usage wisewhat's my next best option that isn't any harder to decode than mp3?do I just go all in on 320kbps mp3, or do I try AAC, or?

@cowanon looks like vorbis uses 25-50% as much CPU time as opus, or about the same as mp3, so that's a pretty good improvement, and it doesn't sound significantly worse, the DAC in this netbook is shit anywaystill gotta test AAC/m4a but this is an acceptable outcome either way

@izaya btw I just found an article on medium which argues that new thinkpads no longer having power bridge is not a problem, because you cab use USB-C power banks. It refutes many pro-bridge argunents like "power banks are bulky" or "it increases wear on the internal battery", but it completely misses the point and overlooks main reason why Power Bridge is cool:The satisfying click when you insert a new battery.
