They produce too much smug./(But little noise, and lots of fun torque.)@ighayworth: "In seven years, you'd save $4,700 on gas. That's $670 a year. The average electric vehicle costs $56,437.So in just 84 years, you'll make your money back!"https://nitter.bus-hit.me/ighaworth/status/1500891180229349381(H/T @KurtSchlichter RT )

@darulharb “For example, someone who lives in an extremely cold region with high electricity rates and low EV incentives from state and local government agencies (subsidies?) will pay more over the life of the vehicle than someone who lives in an area with a mild climate, inexpensive electricity, and favorable tax incentives.“Stuffed way down the article is this nugget. I’m in Montana. The majority of the country lives in cold weather.

@Linnie I’ve got the “mild climate” and “inexpensive electricity” part.

@darulharb —Translation: you’ll either be in an assisted living facility at around 99-100 years old, or buried 6 feet under leaving your grandchildren or great grandchildren to foot the bill.

@darulharb a few years back I did a similar exercise but for the fleet-mandated MPG improvement stuff in vogue at the time. Similar story, the break-even is more than twice the service life of most vehicles. Showing the math to people who understand numbers, but have a vested interest in the story seems to have no effect though.

@darulharb Gotta factor in cost of charging, which isn’t free anymore for new Teslas. Try California, the heartland of smug, currently at 24c/kWh for off peak EV charging.

@darulharb EVs will eventually have to pay an annual surcharge for license plates and maybe a per-mile tax to make up for the lost revenue from excise tax they currently on each gallon gasoline.
