A couple of years ago I looked at #Ethereum and was flabbergasted how many elementary design mistakes they made. I concluded it was a system made by a bunch of script kiddies with no experience in system design, let alone large and/or distributed systems.I never really looked into #NFT or web3 bc they seem to depend (?) on Ethereum.Moxie did and it's hilarious: https://moxie.org/2022/01/07/web3-first-impressions.htmlI hope he's wrong on 'running your own server', but the rest shows ETH devs haven't learned a thing.💩

Can we please just skip this whole web3 nonsense and go straight for Web 3.11 for Workgroups? Also, please stop looking for problems where blockchain could be a solution. In 99+% of cases you don't need a blockchain and it's in fact a horrible idea. It's depressing how stupid people get because of greed. And no, *your* blockchain solution, with ofc it's own token ... bc greed, doesn't solve Ethereum's problems, bc it's fundamentally broken; anything built on top is thus too.

@FreePietje Re: "running your own server", I take it you've probably seen https://dessalines.github.io/essays/why_not_signal.html but if not, worth a read. As for his criticism of web 3.0, it's rather ironic that he runs his own cryptocurrency based on "proof of sgx" (also, lol https://nitter.eu/matthew_d_green/status/1270406251063762944).

@kekcoin That 'essay' is so full of shit, it's not even funny. It's full of insinuations but when you have actually looked into it, like I have, you'd laugh, but it's not funny at all.Pretty much ALL apps that use E2EE uses encryption CREATED by Moxie: https://gitlab.matrix.org/matrix-org/olm#olmMoxie's goal with Signal was to make mass-surveillance much harder, not make the perfect privacy app, and has succeeded majorly. If Signal doesn't fit your needs, fine. But in my book, Moxie is a hacker extraordinaire.

@kekcoin I know that people like to take every opportunity to shit on Signal/Moxie. I'm generally not interested in that and certainly not with the OP toot.If you can find flaws in the article he wrote about NFTs/web 3.0, I really like to hear it (attack the content, not the person). But AFAICT, he managed to lay bare many fundamental things that are wrong with it and demonstrated it in a very funny way.

@FreePietje > That 'essay' is so full of shit, it's not even funny.I'd be interested in any sources debunking it, if you happen to know of any.> [Positive sides of Moxie]All true, but that doesn't make him free of criticism. Especially how he *threatened to sue* projects that removed proprietary google libraries from Signal, as well as his continuing ableist "joke" on https://signal.org/android/apk/ rub me really the wrong way.

@FreePietje > (attack the content, not the person). No, it's perfectly fine to point out criticism to a person, even if you agree with what they are saying in context. For example, Vitalik Buterin regularly bashes random shitcoins, but that doesn't mean Ethereum is good. Both him and Moxie are hypocrites, and it's fine to point that out *even when the points they make are good*.I could list some more "local" political examples but that might expose more information about me than I'd like ;)

@kekcoin - Moxie's problem with the forks was wrt them using the 'Signal' brand. He doesn't believe federation (wrt messaging?) can work (and stated he'd love to be proven wrong) and didn't want to deal with issues caused by the forks. Read through the (early) issues on the issue tracker when he explained those things. I'm not going to do that again for you. DYOR.- OTF has funded *many* FLOSS projects. Dubious history? Could be. You don't trust it? Don't use. Or look at the source code? 🤷

@kekcoin - Signal did get a NSL, which they fought together with EFF or ACLU or both and made PUBLIC. Information revealed? Telephone number and datetime of activation. US gov requested all info wrt tel nr, so activation date was revealed *shock*- Ever tried transferring your Signal data/history to another phone? Apparently they (finally) did implement a procedure (https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007059752-Backup-and-Restore-Messages) but when I last tried it, I took many trial-and-errors to find one way that worked.

@kekcoin When google enabled 'cloud' backup, Signal disabled their backup feature. With centralized storage it would've been really simpel.- Did he know Jacob Applebaum? Probably. The list of public speakers about cryptography isn't exactly in the millions. Were they friends? I don't know. Jacob was highly regarded/respected until 'the allegations'. Still, guilty by association, really?- Essay writer has a problem with his hair style? Seriously, WTF?!?

@kekcoin - Being recommended by Snowden, Laura Poitras and Bruce Schneier? I'd publish that too and be mighty proud- I severely dislike :birdsite: but I learned that Jack Dorsey is much more of a 'nerd' then I'd expected. Also, he bought OWS and made Moxie head of security at Twitter. So yeah, they know each other.- Elon Musk is more of a joke (and not on signal.org), but he posted that when he found out that his own company had a FB page, which he deleted why tweeting about it. FB owns WA ..

@kekcoin ... and while Musk was doing that, one of the founders of WA was tweeting "Delete Facebook" ...That founder is now the main sponsor of Signal and the personal relation between him and Moxie is the reason WA got encrypted messaging.
