What's the secure way to host your own offline crypto wallet(s)? Is there iOS software that can be trusted which uses printed QR codes? Or do I need a cheap offline linux laptop?

...and if I need an offline laptop, anybody suggest something a few years old, cheap and common, with enough Linux or BSD support for such a use? Don't wanna drop a fat stack on something that will live in the cupboard unused most of its life.

@Sophistifunk it is my understanding that cold hardware wallets are more secure, if that is your concern. devices that do not maintain connections to the Internet by default, and require mfa to utilize, etc.I watched "crypto casey" talk about moving crypto off exchanges, she had recommendations, fwiw.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQO7KePXUEQ

@raintrees I'm very wary of crypto-specific hardware for both security and practical / longevity reasons, so it'd have to be a strong pitch from somebody I have reason to trust already.

@Sophistifunk Dell sells refurbished at decent prices and they have Linux support. Just have to make sure you are getting a model that fits that criteria.

@Sophistifunk @runfox @Sophistifunk people telling others to use thinkpads, especially in youtube videos, has artificially raised the price more than 4-5x their actual worth

@graf @runfox @Sophistifunk is it just because they dont have the ME in the chip? or is there another reason they are in such high demand.

@Sophistifunk rapsberry pi? Any cheap laptop with Ubuntu and encrypted install (requires at least TPM 2.0 now). If you want more than that and you can figure out any arm Linux issues, https://www.pine64.org/pinebook/I have an encrypted VM that I launch from my old macbook with Ubuntu on it which I also use for banking and such which has my wallet. And I stamped onto steel washers the recovery phrases and that's in my safe.

@runfox that was my first thought, TBH. Having trouble finding anything that's both cheap and on their supported hw list tho.

@runfox @cosmo @graf framework looks great, but not an option for something that's supposed to be offline all the time, and hence can't be used for anything else productive.

@SophistifunkYou could just get a usb stick and use tails and have an offline bitcoin wallet without buying a specific machine for it. Tails comes with electrum and you could link it to your own node over tor if you were so inclined.

@runfox that's an interesting option I should consider more thoroughly, but I don't currently have any boxen with a physical wifi switch on which to run it.

@Malarkey33 pinebook is vapourware tho. Sure they shipped a few, but everything they "offer" is always sold out.

@Sophistifunk oh, didn't know that.I would say a air gapped cheap Intel laptop then, Intel has the best linux support. Sure its a US government honeypot, but if you air gap it you should be fine!I went down that route and looked up how to do transaction signing on a machine that is air gapped and using wassabi wallet. Ended up as I stated before.
