@nozaki @IAMAL_PHARIUS it used to be a pretty major export manufacturer post war(largely due to the Lira being very favorable to exports). It petered off over time but lasted as a staple of their economy for longer than most of Europe, manufacturing still exists at a comparatively decent level, and it's still #4 GDP in Europe after Germany, UK, and France

@Elfman @IAMAL_PHARIUS I guess a country and still look like shit and have a decent GDP (America), but it's hard for me to believe that Italy is #4 in Europe. The south of Italy feels like a 3rd world country. No one seems to have a job or money, trash everywhere, etc. If I had to guess, I would assume Norway with all it's oil would have a higher GDP than Italy. I have no idea how GDP is calculated, but this is just based on my observations.

@nozaki @IAMAL_PHARIUS tbf, the south of Italy has always been a third world country in many regards. It's a country that has always been carried by the cities in the north, which is why there's been a popular sentiment up there to break the south off into its own country for a while. It's still the 10th largest exporter in the world, has actual industry, not just service/financials/banking, and is home to 9 Fortune 500 companies. It also manages just about an equal exports to it's imports.Now Norway does have a much higher GDP per capita (6th in the world) due to it's oil but that's like 50% of their entire economy and it's a tiny country, with a population less than half of Ohio's. Italy's population is 12x Norway's and as a result, they'll naturally have a significantly larger GDP.

@pinemarten @Elfman @nozaki Inter-state/province GDP comparisions are useful inside its own context. Major ports and trade exchanges swing this very heavily. Doesnt mean the locals are of the same significance richer than others.
