@lain I wonder what would happen if someone did the same, but with Israel. It was reasonably politically correct to condemn Israel as a terrorist-state ten years ago, and there wasn't really any huge media op to change that. I don't think they could cancel an otherwise apolitical dev who decked his site out in "Free Palestine" banners, but it would definitely make them uncomfortable.

More permanent staff makes it easier to enforce and create new laws and hoops to jump through. Decentralized power flowing everywhere down the ladder is supposedly optimal too so why not spread it so thin no one even notices the effects of what they are doing. Good states seek to keep intervention to a minimum, not to find the absolute maximum of it their budgets can possibly sustain
