@alan A sweetener made from corn starch that's been used to replace normal sugar in a lot of products since it's cheaper, but also much worse for you.

@parker @skylar Plastics are a wide material range. You mean petrol based plastics?Also some people consider resins the same as common plastics, but are much more than that.

@thendrix @skylar I mainly mean the most common kinds of petroleum based plastics, like PET, not things like shellac. And I mean, epoxy isn't very good for you, but I was thinking more things like disposable water bottles, styrofoam, polyester textiles, etc.

@parker @alan Yeah, and it got even worse after the Obama admin. His sponsors really pushed corn subsidies and *requirements* for use a fuel additive for petrol/gas. At one point the ethanol mix was so high it damaged some car engines. Basically putting corn in everything you can imagine from plastics and food to fuel.We have specialty drink "Mexican coke" in the US, which refers to a soda with cane sugar. That's how common it is for corn syrup to be in drinks. Anything else is considered from another country.

@parker @thendrix @skylar unnecessary plastic waste sucks, and i hate anything related to food coming in contact with plastichowever in medicine, having sterile instruments and drugs wrapped in plastic is a good way to store them and prevent infection. there are some inustries where plastic is useful and there aren't any alternatives

@thendrix @alan @parker i think it IS from Mexico. It's sold in stores and restaurants around Austin, and it runs out quickly, while the American coke sits on the shelf. Corn syrup is in almost everything here. Even in gasoline, as you said.

@parker Corn syrup is horrible but it's really easy to avoid. Plastic is *everywhere* and is basically impossible to avoid due both to ubiquitous microplastics and the fact that it's actaully really useful for a lot of stuff.
