@CSB @batcatdad it blocks noise up to a certain point (like db)So you can't hear background noise like fans and traffic

@CSB @batcatdad You can set it so that low noises are muted and the channel only opens when talking normal into the mic

@CSB @wyliesau When the sound going into the mic reaches a certain threshold in db (ours is set to -41db) a "gate" opens and allows the signal through. So our background noise is not picked up when we are not speaking, as long as it is lower than -41 db.

@CSB its an audio engineering function, EVERY rock song that plays on the radio has used it. mostly for amp/guitar noise. been pretty well explained in this thread, so the way i think adam uses it is jcd just uses speakers, not headphones, @adam uses a noise gate to get rid of the feedback, i think, its also why @Johncdvorak speaks at high volume, he has to overcome that gate, (adam always tells jcd to turn his speakers down in preshow because he’s fine tuning the level for the gate.)

@CSB @Joshuad22 @batcatdad It can’t distinguish between voice and noise, just db levels. If your air conditioner is running below the gate threshold you’d have silence, but as soon as you talk above the threshold your mic would still pic up your noisy room, then slam shut when you stop talking. Sounds like shit. There was an episode where you could hear jack hammers outside while JCD talked, but went silent when he stopped.

@CSB just to go back to pose gate talk, if you listen to the show with earphones, you’ll hear quick chirps here & there coming from jcd’s side, those are sounds overcoming the gate, then they get tamped down.
