@SuperSnekFriend @WhiteDissidentRadio If you've never been on one, start with something like this: msf-usa.org/students.aspx#brc-brcFor around $200 or so you get some good fundamentals and the schools provide all the gear and a basic bike, so if you decide after that it isnt your thing you are not out much. Passing the course counts as your license endorsement requirements in quite a few places and insurance companies give a nice discount if you've completed MSF courses.

Machines like the Suzuki DR650, the KLR, Honda 650L have been around for decades, are fairly affordable, can take a fair amount of punishment and with a bit of skill and dedication can go almost anywhere. Life is interesting when you start looking at dirt berms, catchments, medians, barricade gaps, and start thinking "I could ride over that, I could fit through there..."

@DemonSixOne I've always been partial to tinkering and resoration. My first bike was a 78 Kawasaki 650 street bike. Air cooled. I restored it, it had been sitting since 1980.Then I bought a kawasaki vulcan 750 years later. Nice shaft driven bike, easy to ride.

@WhiteDissidentRadio Good times. I rode a Yamaha WR250F that I had converted into a 75/25 dirt/street setup for many years. Fairly quick for a small bore light weight thumper and if I was kind to the throttle 40mpg was easy to obtain.

@Turkleton The thing is, motorcycle culture has been stale since the 1970s. Nobody is doing anything with it. Sure, you have the Sons of Zion, but that has been the biker gang story for 40 years or more. Out of necessity and because it's fun, we should just snatch motorcycle culture away from boomers. @WhiteDissidentRadio @Turkleton yeah, I like motorcycles but haven't been able to afford one, and I'm not very handy with engines. I've met a few Hell's angels, Trinity Knights, Damnation Riders. I may buy a hog one day but I just can't see myself trying to live out some Sons of Anarchy fantasy. I'd just like to chill and take some rides in the mountains and countryside.

Some really neat looking stuff out there but everytime I'm reminded that off-pavement adventures today are limited to just me, and all I need is a pack and maybe some soft bags on something like a Beta 500.

@DemonSixOne @WhiteDissidentRadio I still have one, 1974 twinshock. It's been through my father, my brother and me. The engine has never been rebuilt, it just keeps going. The frame rusted out so I found a used one in good condition. When I was stripping it down I discovered I've been riding around with a broken swingarm, the weld on the right side is completely cracked all the way around. I have no idea how that didn't end badly. Waiting for better weather to paint and put it all back together.
