Another question for the fediverse:What in your opinion is the best and simplest way to transfer files in bulk (i.e. #backup) from an Android phone to an external hard drive?(A computer with either Linux or Mac OS X is available for this)I swear, thing should've been a no-brainer by just plugging in the USB and doing some Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V in a file manager. But no: MTP issues, can't mount, connection to phone is lost every 3 minutes or sth.So how would you do it best?#askfedi

@kzimmermann I usually have USB debugging enabled on my phone. so I just plug in the phone and use adb pull to get files off of the phone.

@kzimmermann Start by making two circles on the floor with salt. Place the phone in one and the hard drive in the other.Summon dark spirits. Offer your favorite pair of headphones as sacrifice. Request that your files move from one to the other.

@kzimmermann adb into it, adb push an rsync binary, and use it to push stuff onto a computer?rsync wrapper from the play store is also nice if you want to do it regularly (and gives you a precompiled rsync binary, too)not the simplest, but to me it was more reliable than plain adb pull (if it's tons of data)

@greenpete how do you mount it? I've always had some sort of trouble with it any time I had to transfer anything more than 10 files at once.

@Phate6660 with the server running the *phone,* I guess? Because when I run it in the helping computer / server and access from the phone using ghost commander, the phone always cuts the connection after the screen shuts off.

@fedops that sounds like the most solid approach. The user would have to know a little about SSH, but I guess I can leave it pre-set for them the first time

@kzimmermann Yeah. There's a great app on F-Droid called primitiveftp that I use to connect to my phone with. :DIt makea it dead simple to set up a temporary (S)FTP server on your phone.MTP has always been shit, and this was a great solution I found to circumvent it.

@Phate6660 great idea! Nice low friction solution, except that the user would have to keep track of the server's IP I guess

@kzimmermann Not sure if "bulk" is a hard requirement for you. If you have certain folders that you want to back up and the phone and computer are regularly on the same network: You could use syncthing for transfer to the computer and then use your normal backup routine there. That's what I do.

@kzimmermann ok. im not sure if i ever tried that. but we backed everything up to an ssd by moving folders. come to think of it it seems like a lot of files may have not made it when i ctrlvc'd it.

@kzimmermann Not sure about the bulk part of your questions, but wouldn't KDE connect do just that? Let you easily transfer files from/to the phone on a computer, using a nice GUI?

@kzimmermann @ssafar some years ago I used to use AirDroid. It uses local network to transfer and give you a nice web UI that you can connect to with your computer. There was also an sFTP software that I used to use but I don't remember the name. I instead found this but I don't know if it uses LAN or WAN:https://f-droid.org/en/packages/be.ppareit.swiftp_free/

@kzimmermann yeah. The sshd must be started and there's a one-time effort of uploading the key to it.On the PC side you just create a couple of small scripts that go to the right directory and either push or pull the files using rsync -avz . I have three: push music to phone; pull photos off phone; and push a folder with apks, my keepass file, and other things I want to have on the phone.Very easy and can be automated via cron so you always have a current backup.

@kzimmermann I plug it into a P.C. (LinuxMint in my case), then on my phone I go to 'Settings' then 'Connected Devices' then USB and select Transfer files. It should then mount as an external drive. You should find the mounted directory here - /run/user/$UID/gvfs/mtp*/ (In Linux). So - rsync -atv --delete --progress /run/user/$UID/gvfs/mtp*/ is the command I use, you may want to do it differently.

@kzimmermann syncthing, connect the laptop to phone’s hotspot and shutdown data, syncthing can transfer within network with internet needed as a trigger at first but not for the whole process

@kzimmermann I use termux on the Android device with rsync. MTP has a lot of unreliability issues for it to be useful, I find.

@ConfuSomu termux is awesome, there's basically nothing that can't be done once you have it!But I was sort of thinking about a solution easy enough that I could teach a non-computer-savvy user about

@kzimmermann using "ftp server pro" in my home network to copy files back and forward. It works reliable for me. However power settings on the phone must be correct. Otherwise connection will stop quickly.
