So #bandcamp is boght by #epic , creators and buyers are looking for #alternatives now. Here I try to collect some if my thoughts on #BandcampAlternatives1. For me as a buyer, it is not about streaming. Its about buying music #mp3 I can download and keep. I also want artists get most of the money I pay. 2. I dont need a platform, it could be #DirectTrade : I paypal you , the creator, 10 €, you e-Mail me a download link. 1/?

3. Theres not so much special about #music - its #DigitalProduct . If it is audio, video, #ebook, #eLearning, #games, images or whatever should not matter that much. That being said, any platform letting you sell digital product should do. 4. I don't know what general platforms there are, years ago I heard of itch.io ( its intended for games, but works for everything ? ) #itch #itchio . 2/?

5. If we use a platform, it should have a valid and lasting, sustainable business model. It should not be #vcFunded . idealy, the owners should not be able to sell it. The platform being owned by the creators (and consumers) using it, would be great. A #coop model might do that, #platformCoop is the right term I think ( think examples like #fairmondo, #fairBnB or #comradery .) 3/?

7. If you want a #marketplace ownend by its users, its allready there, up and running for many years: #fairmondo.de . They are also in the Fediverse: @Fairmondo . Please not: its not realy made for #DigitalProduct so you would need to take care of hosting your files and providing download links yourself (like with the #DirectTrade-idea) , but they would help with handling discovery and payment . ( mainly / only operating in Germany )5/?

@joachim_kreativ this is such a weird acquisition, and the only logical explanation for this is that Epic wants to become another Sony that dabbles in all things entertainment. EGS turned out to be a failure, so they're getting into the publishing business now....and apparently that includes music now

@joachim_kreativ There’s a handful of artists that do that but they seem to want to use platforms first. Especially if they’re selling a physical copy of an album. Honestly though where is Epic getting all of this capital from? When they launched their gaming platform they didn’t have much and burned through so much $$ with giveaways and acquiring exclusives. It’s nuts. Their platform is slow as shit and was basically spyware when it launched. Do people actually use it? I got rid of it instantly. I’m a steam nigger for life

@zero @joachim_kreativ you don't buy up a company in a different industry you have no experience in just to make a video game. If it truly is an attempt at gobbling up indie music rights for a game that no one can predict the success of, then artists have every right to believe that the service will become exploitative and possibly neglected in the future

@joachim_kreativ There is an activity pub service for musicians called funkwhale, but last I checked I couldn’t find a lot of active artists.I also recently learned about resonate and ampled which look interesting.
