I've doing a new podcast series. This time over on my website:https://chriswere.wales/marchcast/I'd be interested to know if you folks would prefer MP3 or opus. Opus is a much smaller filesize, but I'd love feedback on it.

@ChrisWere I have literally never heard of opus. Is it widely usable by a lot of audio software or?

@ChrisWere it is already supported by lots of audio players, including AntennaPod so I'd say go with opus ππ

@ChrisWere FOSS manages Opus just fine, go for it! Walled garden environments might give some excuses but who cares π

@ChrisWere For all those still thinking that MP3 is non-free: it has the same status as Opus. It's an open and free format since 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3#Licensing,_ownership,_and_legislation

@ChrisWere It's a podcast, so better audio quality with Opus is not needed and I'm fine with MP3. But if it's not too much of a hassle, do both formats. And please host a RSS file, so I can subscribe to this marchcast...

@ChrisWere just listened to the opus podcast as the Internet is crap out in the North Sea and it was perfect. BTW for your music on linux, people always overlook Kodi which I find great as a jukebox type thing and is accessible on my android devices too.

@ChrisWere forgot to say, make sure you use icon wall to make it like a jukebox you find in the pub. For a simple mp3 player with good visuals, I still use Winamp 5.56 via wine. It was the best version before it had too much bloat.

@andrewmacleod Winamp via WINE? That's a full alpha move right there!

@ChrisWere it's a bit overkill but nothing beats winamp 5.56. Xmms tried but if you give it a shot, you'll see what I mean. It does have some drawing issues on gnome, but for some reason it's lightning fast on lxde

@ChrisWere On #FDroid a #music #app I've enjoyed using because of its simplicity & its use of file/folder structure to organise your music. It's called Sicmu player. https://f-droid.org/en/packages/souch.smp/

@ChrisWere If I was you (and I'm not), I'd publish two feeds. One for Opus and one for MP3. Personally I'd pick the former.

@ChrisWere Looking forward to new episodes! Any chance we can get them on your gemini instance, though?Re: music players on F-Droid. My choice has been Vanilla Music for some time. But VLC works well, too.

@guigui3000 @ChrisWere I'll check out vanilla music. I swapped from VLC to auxio because I got sick of the weird UI (when scrolling active playlist, you have to swipe up a bit before going down to avoid minimising it instead of scrolling up), and not including video files. Auxio doesn't do that either, but it keeps the order when playing shuffle, and the default behaviour of queuing everything when selecting a song is great too.I definitely recommend trying out mpv-android. It's an experience.
