A common expression I hear about a place that someone doesn’t like is “You couldn’t pay me to live there.”Is there…is there a place where someone pays you to reside in it? Where does this expression come from?

Like, I’ll gladly live in a desolate shithole for free. As long as there’s a roof over my head and conditions aren’t too horrible. Rent is covered? Fuck it, let’s go.

@sean I was paid to live in Belgium for a year when I was at university. A tech company also once offered to pay to "relocate" me to Dublin. So it does apparently happen. 🙂

I’ve been paid to relocate inside the US- there are also cities that incentivize remote workers with grants, or money for your down paymentI know Kansas City specifically had such a program, as did West Virginia. Rural cities in eastern OR do this too. These also happen to be great examples of places I wouldn’t be interested in living

@sean Indeed! Many coastal cities still employ lighthouse keepers, for example, and some old European and British properties employ professional hermits. :)

@amcooper Yeah, maybe. As an Air Force troop living in the dorms, the government already owns the building I live in, and doesn’t charge me rent. On the other hand, I’m in a binding contract and have to pay with my labor for several years until those terms are fulfilled.

@sean I was gonna say, you're closer than most to the "pay me to live there" reality.

@dustin yeah, but there's all kinds of strings attached. Which isn't inherently bad, but the tradeoff is significant enough that it's not exactly "free money". 😋But then, not many circumstances are.
